History check with the master unit list
After familiarizing ourselves with the surface in the last part about the MUL, today we’re getting down to the nitty-gritty. In BattleTech, a mech is not just a mech. A Warhammer from the year 3025 is a completely different beast to its great-grandson from the year 3145.
Find out why you shouldn’t just throw everything together (unless your friends allow it) in this history check.
The “when”: The eras (Eras)
The BattleTech timeline spans centuries. MUL divides these into clearly defined eras. This is important because the technology develops massively. You can find detailed information on the eras and their meaning here.
Why is this important for your list? If you arrange a game in the Succession Wars era, a mech with Clan Ultra AC/20 would be an unfair (and lore-wise impossible) advantage. With one click, the MUL filters out all units that match your chosen time period.
The “who”: The factions (Factions)
In the MUL, almost every mech is assigned to one or more factions. Just because a mech exists in the Inner Sphere doesn’t mean that everyone can use it.
The big players:
- Great Houses: Steiner (Lyrans), Kurita (Combine), Davion (Federated Suns) etc.
- Clans: Clan Wolf, Ghost Bear, Jade Falcon etc.
- Mercenaries: Mercenaries often have access to a colorful mix, but even here there are limits.
The “flavor” factor: A House Kurita player is more likely to go for Panther or Dragon, while a Steiner player (stereotypically) refers to anything under 80 tons as a “Scout”. The MUL shows you under the “Faction Availability” tab whether your desired faction even has a significant number of this type of mech.
Practical tip: Find the “sweet spot”
Combine the Era and Faction filters in the MUL to create your perfect, true-to-Lore list:
| Step | Action in the MUL | Result |
| 1 | Click on Factions | Choose e.g. “House Steiner” |
| 2 | Select the Era | Choose e.g. “Clan Invasion” |
| 3 | Result | You can see all the mechs that were available to Steiner during the clan invasion. |
Important for the game balance: The Point Values (PV) in Alpha Strike or Battle Value (BV) in Classic BattleTech ensure that a battle between 3025 technology and clan technology remains fair – but the game experience is completely different!
Why all this?
Of course, you can play whatever you want in “Beer & Pretzels” mode. But using the MUL for the history check offers three major advantages:
- Immersion: It simply feels more “right” when the lance fits together historically.
- Tournament standard: Almost all official events use MUL availability as the basis for unit selection.
- Discoveries: You’ll find variants of your favorite mech that you didn’t even know existed!
