Masterclass: VTOLs in BattleTech Alpha Strike – Takeoff, Landing, Critical Hits, and the FLK Threat
VTOLs (Vertical Take-Off and Landing, identifiable by the “v” in their movement code on the unit card) are, in my opinion, among the most fascinating units in BattleTech Alpha Strike. They bring vertical mobility, devastating range as spotters, and flexible lines of sight to the tabletop, often making classic ground vehicles and BattleMechs look outdated.

But this freedom in the air comes at a price: Asair vehicles, VTOLs are subject to very specific rules. Anyone who underestimates the nuances of takeoff, ascent, landing, and—above all—critical hits or the enemy’s “ FLK ” special ability will see their fast scout turn into a fireball in the blink of an eye.
I’ve summarized the most important rules, pitfalls, and practical tips for your next matches!
1. Movement & Altitude (Elevation)
Playing along the z-axis is a VTOL’s greatest advantage, but it requires precise calculations and forward-thinking planning.
- Vertical Movement: Changing altitude costs a significant amount of movement range (MV). For every inch of altitude I climb or descend, I must spend 2 inches of movement range (MV).
- Airborne Status: As long as my VTOL maintains an altitude of at least 1 inch above the playing field, it is considered airborne.
- Terrain & Line of Sight: A flying VTOL ignores ground obstacles such as rivers, sparse forests, or small walls as long as its altitude is higher than the respective terrain. But be careful: I cannot fly over terrain that is higher than my current altitude!
2. Takeoff and Landing: Be careful when touching down!
A VTOL can move on the ground or fly—but the transitions are strictly regulated.
Landing
To land safely, I must reduce my altitude to 0 inches as I approach the ground.
- Safe Landing Zones: Landing is permitted only in open areas (Clear) or on paved surfaces (Paved) where there is no risk.
- Dangerous Landings & Crashes: If I attempt to land on unsuitable terrain (e.g., forests/woods) or on water, a crash will occur immediately! (Exception: The VTOL has the special ability “
AMP” / “Amphibious”).
Infobox: The Consequences of a Crash If a VTOL crashes, it immediately takes 1 point of damage, must check for critical hits immediately, and is considered immobilized for the rest of the game.
Takeoff
A VTOL standing on the ground does not simply take off horizontally. During theMovement Phase, I must first gain at least 1 inch of altitude at the start of the movement (which costs 2 inches of MV) before I can travel a horizontal distance.
3. Fire: Defensive Bonuses & the Threat from FLK (Anti-Aircraft Fire)
Flying makes it hard to be hit—but enemy anti-aircraft fire mercilessly negates this advantage.
- +1 Target Modifier: If an enemy unit attacks my flying VTOL, it receives a +1 target modifier (in addition to the VTOL’s normal Target Movement Modifier / TMM). A fast VTOL with a high TMM is extremely difficult to take down with normal standard attacks!
- No Melee: VTOLs may not make physical melee attacks on turns in which they use their VTOL movement.
- The Threat from ”
FLK” (Flak): VTOL pilots must be extremely careful here! If an attacker possesses the special ability “FLK#/#/#/#” (Flak) or uses Flak ammunition, special rules apply. If an attacker misses their die roll against a flying VTOL by 2 points or less (Margin of Failure ≤ 2) with “FLK,” the attack still inflicts damage equal to the specified “FLK” value at that range! So a shot that narrowly misses will still graze my VTOL and often directly deplete armor or structure points.
4. The Weakness: Critical Hits & Engine Damage
As hard as it is to hit VTOLs—if a shot lands and penetrates the armor, things get explosive. Since VTOLs are classified as combat vehicles, critical hits hit them hard:
- Loss of Movement in the Air (Death Sentence): If a flying VTOL (altitude ≥ 1″) is reduced to 0 inches MV due to critical hits or damage to its propulsion system, it instantly loses all lift. It falls like a stone onto the terrain below and crashes!
- Overview of Critical Effects:
- Engine Hit: Halves movement range and damage output. Halved MV in the air drastically limits maneuverability.
- Motive Hit / Drive Damaged: Gradually reduces movement rate. If MV drops to 0, the craft crashes.
- Fire Control Hit: Applies a cumulative penalty of +2 to all of your attack rolls.
My Strategy for the Game Table
I love VTOLs on the game board. Their enormous range makes them the perfect units for bypassing enemy cover and acting as spotters for units with the ” IF ” special ability.
My personal advice for your next games: When setting up your formation and planning your movements, pay close attention to enemy units with “ FLK ” or special rules like “Anti-Aircraft Specialists”! They can easily nullify your evasion bonus. Use vertical range wisely and stay at a safe distance from anti-air units!
