Lorescape Kickstarter for BattleTech

A Revolution on the Game Table: Why the Lorescape Kickstarter Is an Absolute Game-Changer for BattleTech

I recently raved about the Lorescape system. Back then, I was a backer on the very first Kickstarter campaign and was extremely excited to see how much this modular terrain would enhance my tabletop battles. Spoiler: It exceeded my expectations!

Transparency Notice Regarding Our Own Affairs

Just to make this absolutely clear from the start: I was neither paid, sponsored, nor commissioned by Lorescape to write this post.
I already backed the first Kickstarter out of my own pocket and on my own initiative because the idea behind the terrain system piqued my curiosity. Since the materials and the flexibility on the gaming table ultimately won me over completely, I’d like to share my enthusiasm and experiences with you here on the blog. As always, from Mechwarrior to Mechwarrior.

Now the creators of Lorescape are stepping it up and launching a new Kickstarter campaign specifically geared toward classic BattleTech on hex maps. For me, as a passionate MechCommander, this is the news of the month—and today I’d like to explain in more detail why this system is an absolute game-changer for both the classic hex-grid setup and fast-paced Alpha Strike games.

The Problem with Classic HexMap Battlefields

Anyone who plays BattleTech on traditional paper or neoprene hex maps is familiar with the problem:

  • Uneven terrain or differentelevation levels are often represented on a map solely by numbers. This requires some imagination, but it looks flat.
  • When building classic 3D terrain on paper maps, the edges of hills or forests rarely align exactly with the printed hexagonal grid.
  • If pieces slip out of place or obscure markings, discussions about line of sight or movement costs can quickly arise at the gaming table.

That’s where the new Lorescape Kickstarter comes in: It offers custom-fit hextiles that are precisely tailored to the standard hexes on the official BattleTech maps. That said, the tiles from the first Kickstarter fit perfectly, too!

Why the New Lorescape system is so flexible

I’ve already had the chance to thoroughly test the basic principle of the Lorescape terrain. What’s brilliant about it is its modular design:

1. Perfect for BattleTech HexMaps

The Hextiles can be placed directly on the maps to create a three-dimensional representation of gentle hills, steep cliffs, or elevated terrain. Elevation levels can be stacked on top of each other seamlessly. You can see at a glance whether your Atlas is taking cover behind a Level 2 hill or whether the enemy Griffin is taking advantage of the clear line of sight from a plateau.

2. Also top-notch on the Alpha Strike table

Anyone who, like me, regularly plays BattleTech Alpha Strike without hexes on an open field has nothing to worry about: The Hextiles look fantastic even on an open 3D gaming table! Thanks to their texture and paint job, they resemble organic rock formations and terrain features.

Tactical Tip for Setup: The modular tiles let me create a completely new playing field in under three minutes before every game. That way, no battle is ever the same—whether it’s a fast-paced Alpha Strike skirmish or a tactical HexMap battle.

An Overview of the Highlights of the New Kickstarter Campaign

  • Special BattleTech Fit: Designed to seamlessly align with the dimensions of the official BattleTech map sheets.
  • Endless Variations: New terrain types such as rocky canyons, hills, plateaus, and craters can be combined in any way you like.
  • High Stability and Lightweight: No more annoying slippage in the middle ofthe Movement Phase.
  • Compact storage: Even extensive landscapes can be stored in a space-saving manner.

My Personal Conclusion

I was already impressed by the build quality and gameplay after the first campaign. The fact that Lorescape is now releasing Hextiles specifically tailored to BattleTech’s hex grid and its color scheme fills a huge gap in the hex terrain market. If you want to enhance the look of your BattleTech table without sacrificing visibility of the rules, you definitely shouldn’t miss this Kickstarter!
