Tactic: Shielding Movement

Shielding Movement: The Perfect Shield for Your Key Units

In the fierce battles of BattleTech Alpha Strike , victory or defeat is often determined not only by sheer firepower, but also by the clever positioning of your units. While heavy mechs can easily withstand powerful salvos, light reconnaissance mechs, fire-support LRM carriers, or vulnerable infantry squads are often wiped out after just one well-aimed hit.

This is exactly where one of the most valuable optional movement rules comes into play: Shielding Movement!

Today, we’ll take a look at exactly how Shielding Movement works, what rules you need to keep in mind, and what tactical tricks you can use to perfectly save your key units from destruction.

Shielding Movement

What is a Shielding Movement?

Shielding Movement represents a unit’s active and self-sacrificing attempt to place itself directly in the line of fire in order to protect another—usually weaker or more tactically important—allied unit from enemy fire.

An overview of the basic rules:

  1. Movement Requirement: At the end of its movement phase , the shielding unit must have at least 1 inch of ground movement remaining in order to come into base-to-base contact with the unit it is protecting. Jumping may not be used for this purpose.
  2. Size ratio: The unit providing protection must be at least as tall (or taller) as the unit it is intended to protect.
  3. The Attack Modifier: If the shield is up, every enemy attack whoseline of sight passes through the position of the defending unit receives a penalty to its aim:
    • +1 modifier if the protecting unit is a vehicle (Combat/Support Vehicle) without special dimensions.
    • +2 modifier if the protecting unit is a BattleMech or ProtoMech.
  4. Absorbing Damage: If the attacker misses the protected unit by a margin (Margin of Failure) that is equal to or less than the modifier generated by the shield, the protected unit absorbs the hit and takes the damage! If the attack misses by more than this modifier, the shot misses completely.

Important: Units with the special characteristics LG (Large), VLG, or SLG (such as DropShips or massive structures) automatically block the line of sight as artificial terrain and do not need to declare Shielding Movement. There are also separate, expanded cover rules for infantry (Using Non-Infantry Units as Cover). Furthermore, Shielding Movement does not protect against area-of-effect damage (artillery, bombs) or air-to-ground attacks!

Tactical Applications on the Field

The mechanics sound simple, but they open up brilliant tactical options on the tabletop. Here are the best ways to use them in your next Alpha Strike matches:

1. The “VIP Bodyguard” (Protecting Command Units)

Your spearhead or commander often leads units with important special abilities (e.g., MHQ for initiative bonuses or C3 Master for network control). If you lose these key mechs early on, your army’s synergy falls apart. By using Shielding Movement to place a sturdy Brawler or Juggernaut (like a Thunderbolt or Atlas) directly in front of your Commander, you force the opponent to make extremely difficult rolls—or to waste their salvos on your bodyguard’s thick armor.

2. Protection for the “Glass Cannons”

Units like the Glass Spider, the SRM Carrier, or fast Strikers deal massive damage but can barely withstand any hits in return. If, after moving, they end up in a disadvantageous position without natural terrain cover (such as forests or buildings), you can bring in a heavily armored Mech to grant them the crucial +2 modifier via base-to-base contact. This saves your damage dealers for the next round.

3. The Double Shield (Cascaded Shielding)

Since the shielding bonus applies to every line of sight that passes through a shielding unit, the system can even be stacked! If an enemy attacker’s line of sight passes through two allied units using Shielding Movement, the modifiers are added together. Two Mechs in front of a targeted enemy add a massive +4 modifier to the opponent’s target roll!

4. Forcing an Advance Across Open Terrain

Sometimes the scenario (e.g., Breakthrough or capturing mission objectives in the center of the map) forces you to cross open areas without cover. If you stagger your formation so that the heaviest units at the front use Shielding Movement to shield the lighter units behind them, you advance as a cohesive phalanx. The enemy will be forced to wear down your armored “anvils” first before they can threaten your fast mission objective capturers.

Conclusion

Shielding Movement is a fantastic tool in every Alpha Strike commander’s arsenal. It transforms simple positioning into an active defensive strategy and gives heavy units a clear purpose, even when they’re not within optimal range for their own weapon attacks.
