Battle Armor in a Taxi: How OMNI and XMEC Make Your Infantry Mobile in Alpha Strike
Infantry and Battle Armor in BattleTech Alpha Strike have enormous potential: They capture mission objectives, secure chokepoints, and deliver nasty surprises to enemy Mechs in close combat. But it has one major problem: its movement. When your infantry or Battle Armor (BA) can only scramble across the table at a measly 2 to 6 inches per round, it often arrives too late to make a difference.
This is exactly where mechanized infantry comes into play. Today, I’ll show you how your Battle Armor becomes extremely mobile thanks to the OMNI special ability and alternative transport options like XMEC, allowing it to strike where it hurts the enemy the most in the blink of an eye.
1. The Perfect Symbiosis: Battle Armor (MEC) & OMNI
The standard method for transporting Battle Armor across the battlefield relies on the interaction of two abilities: MEC (Mechanized) on the Battle Armor’s card and OMNI on the transport vehicle’s or mech’s card.
Here’s how boarding and disembarking work (tabletop procedure):
- Boarding: During the Movement Phase, your Battle Armor moves into base-to-base contact with an OMNI unit. Boarding costs the infantry 2 inches of their movement range. Important: Boarding must take place before the OMNI transport vehicle moves this round!
- Transport: The OMNI unit can carry only one Battle Armor unit on its exterior at a time. The transport vehicle then moves its full range of movement.
- Disembark: In the next round, the transport vehicle moves first. Immediately afterward, the Battle Armor disembarks, is placed in base-to-base contact, and may still move up to half of its own movement range. In the following Combat Phase, it may attack at full strength!
Tactical Tip: If an OMNI unit is transporting Battle Armor, the BA cannot be selected directly as a target. However, if the transporter is hit, roll 1D6: On a 5–6, the Battle Armor on board absorbs the damage!
2. XMEC: The All-Around Upgrade for All Mechs
What do you do if you want to transport your Battle Armor using a standard Mech that doesn’t have the OMNI ability? That’s where the special ability XMEC (Extended Mechanized) comes in!
Units with XMEC are specially equipped to latch onto any type of mech or ground vehicle—without needing the OMNI special rule “.”
| Feature | MEC + OMNI | XMEC (Extended Mechanized) |
| Required Transporter Attribute | OMNI is required | Works with any mech or ground vehicle |
| Effect on Movement | No penalties for the OMNI vehicle | Non-OMNI transporters lose 2 inches of movement |
| capacity | 1 BA unit per OMNI transporter | 1 BA unit per transporter |
The catch with XMEC: When an XMEC unit attaches itself to a normal mech, the mech’s suspension suffers from the additional weight. The transporter loses 2 inches of movement per round as long as the BA is attached.
3. Additional Transport Options for Battle Armor
If you don’t have OMNI-Mechs or XMEC infantry on hand, there are other tried-and-true ways in the BattleTech universe to get your armored soldiers to the front lines:
- Infantry Transports (IT#): Classic troop transports, such as the famous Maxim Hover Transport, possess the IT# (Infantry Transport) ability. Each Battle Armor has a cargo capacity value called CAR# (Cargo). As long as the transporter’s IT value is equal to or greater than the BA’s CAR value, it will fit inside the protected interior.
- Zipline Drops & Combat Drops (VTOLs / Aerospace): Flying transporters equipped with ”
IT#” can deploy Battle Armor via zipline drop directly over the target area without having to land. - Magnetic Clamp Systems (MCS) / ProtoMechs: Similar to XMEC, this ability even allows certain ProtoMechs to latch onto BattleMechs and ride along.
Conclusion: The taxi makes all the difference
If you have your Battle Armor march across the field on foot, you’re wasting its greatest potential. The combination of MEC and OMNI allows you to transport agile snipers or heavy elementals deep into enemy lines in the blink of an eye. And thanks to XMEC, you’re flexible enough on the battlefield to equip even your standard Mechs with dangerous cargo!
