Which mechs should I buy and paint? Maximum faction flexibility in the ilClan era
If you’re new to BattleTech Alpha Strike will sooner or later face a tricky question: Which color scheme should I choose, and which BattleMechs should I paint and display in my display case without committing myself to a single faction right away?
Especially in the current ilClan era (beginning in 3151), the universe is in a state of upheaval. Empires are crumbling, new empires such as the Tamar Pact and the Alyina Mercantile League are emerging, and the mercenary trade is booming like never before. According to the official Master Unit List (MUL), there are exactly 31 playable factions in this era, each with its own unit pool.
The best part is: You don’t have to commit to a single house or clan right away—or forever. If you choose wisely, you can assemble a force that you can deploy almost anywhere on the battlefield for many different factions. Whether as a house militia, a mercenary lance, or a clan garrison.
I’ve analyzed the data from the Master Unit List and narrowed down the most universally versatile BattleMechs of the ilClan era for you.
1. The three absolute all-rounders (available in 31 out of 31 factions)
There are exactly three chassis (out of 2,767) in the entire game that are playable in every single one of the 31 factions from the ilClan era, without exception. If you have these mechs in your squad, you literally can’t go wrong:
- Size 1 (Light): Stinger (31/31 Factions): The undisputed king of light scouts. Whether in the deep space of the Periphery, among the troops of ilClan Wolf on Terra, or among nameless pirates: the Stinger is the most versatile reconnaissance unit in the galaxy.
- Size 3 (Heavy): Rifleman (31/31 Factions): The classic anti-air and ranged combat mech. Thanks to modernized refits and widespread production, the Rifleman can be found in every faction.
- Size 4 (Super-Heavy): Atlas (31/31 Factions): The ultimate symbol of destruction and resilience. Every army worth its salt (or that has amassed enough loot) has an Atlas leading its assault spears.
2. The Flexible Hangar by Size Class (Sizes 1 through 4)
To help you build a well-balanced squad for Alpha Strike, here’s a guide to which Mechs in each size class offer the best faction coverage.
Size 1: Light (20–35 metric tons) – The Scouts and Garrison Workers
| Chassis | Factions (of 31) | Why it belongs in your collection |
| Stinger | 31 | The absolute standard light of the galaxy. |
| Vixen (Incubus) | 30 | The most widespread Clan Second Line Light—bridging the gap between Clan and IS. |
| Ostscout | 28 | Sensor and reconnaissance specialist. |
| Valkyrie | 28 | Originally a classic of the Federated Suns, it was in service almost everywhere during the ilClan era. |
| Locust | 25 | The forefather of all flankers and fast disruptors. |
Size 2: Medium (40–55 metric tons) – The backbone of any army
| Chassis | Factions (of 31) | Why it belongs in your collection |
| Griffin | 30 | Indispensable for nearly all Houses, peripheral states, and mercenaries. |
| Griffin IIC | 29 | The extremely powerful Clan variant of the classic—covers nearly all Clan pools. |
| Chameleon | 28 | Technically a training mech, but a valued stopgap during the ilClan era. |
| Phoenix Hawk | 25 | The best mobile command and control mech for rapid response forces. |
| Shadow Hawk IIC | 24 | A highly advanced Clan upgrade of the Inner Sphere’s most versatile all-around unit. |
Size 3: Heavy (60–75 metric tons) – The Main Battle Line
| Chassis | Factions (of 31) | Why it belongs in your collection |
| Rifleman | 31 | Represented in all 31 factions—provides universal air and long-range fire support. |
| Archer | 30 | The gold standard for LRM fire support. |
| Warhammer | 30 | An iconic frontline brawler for nearly every faction. |
| Rifleman IIC / Thunderbolt | 24 | One covers the clan ranks, while the other holds its own as a rugged IS brawler. |
| Vulture Mk IV (Mad Dog Mk IV) | 24 | One of the most modern ilClan OmniMechs, which you’ll see almost everywhere thanks to Clan Sea Fox. |
Size 4: Superheavy (Assault, 80–100+ metric tons) – The Unstoppable
| Chassis | Factions (of 31) | Why it belongs in your collection |
| Atlas | 31 | The bogeyman of the battlefield in every single army, without exception. |
| BattleMaster | 26 | The very common heavy command mech. |
| Warhammer IIC | 25 | Maximum firepower for clan forces and advanced mercenaries. |
| Longbow / Phoenix Hawk IIC | 24 | Dominant LRM carrier (IS) or highly mobile 80-metric-ton jumper (Clan). |
| Mad Cat Mk II | 22 | A powerful 90-metric-ton unit that, thanks to intergalactic trade, is found in vast numbers in armies. |
3. The “Sea Fox Effect”: Modern Clan Mechs for Everyone!
In the past, anyone who wanted to play Clan Mechs faced significant limitations. That changed radically during the ilClan era— thanks mainly to Clan Sea Fox.
The Sea Foxes’ Merchant Doctrine states: Money doesn’t stink. Chassis such as the Mad Cat Mk IV (Savage Wolf), the Vulture Mk IV, and the Mad Cat Mk II appear in over 20 different factions. Even traditional Inner Sphere houses purchase modern Clan OmniMechs directly from Sea Fox’s sales catalogs.
For you, this means: You can paint and use modern Clan miniatures with complete peace of mind, without violating the game’s Lore!
4. MechStrategist Tip: The Ideal Paint Scheme for Maximum Flexibility
To get the absolute maximum playability out of your hangar, I recommend two approaches to painting:
- The Mercenary Scheme (The Easiest Way):Paint your mechs in a neutral, tactical scheme (camouflage, olive green, desert sand, or a sophisticated charcoal gray/silver). The key point: With 2,283 available units (MUL, all unit types), the general Mercenary Pool is by far the largest pool in the entire game. A neutrally painted mercenary lance can fight today as a mercenary for the Lyran Commonwealth, tomorrow for the Raven Alliance, and next week for a local militia on Solaris 7.
- Garrison & Second-Line Troops:Give your clan’s second-line mechs (such as the Griffin IIC, Vixen, or Warhammer IIC) a simple, two-tone color scheme. They fit perfectly into both a Clan Tumult battle and the ranks of the Alyina Mercantile League or the Tamar Pact.
Conclusion
If you put together a starting force for Alpha Strike consisting, for example, of a Stinger, a Griffin, a Rifleman or Warhammer, and an Atlas, you’ll have a force that you can legitimately field on almost any tabletop in the world.
