2. the units included in detail

The Inner Sphere Fire Lance combines three highly specialized assault mechs with an agile medium mech to create a fire support network that is difficult to evade.

You can find an unboxing video here.

1. longbow (LGB-7V / LGB-0W)

  • Class: Assault (80 tons)
  • Lore background: The classic, almost legendary long-range missile carrier of the Inner Sphere. It is known for being able to fire more missiles at once than almost any other mech in its weight class.
  • Special features: Massive output of long-range missiles (LRMs). The Longbow is a stationary artillery platform that rarely sees the front line, but delivers the most damage from a distance.

2nd Stalker (STK-3F / STK-5M)

  • Class: Assault (85 tons)
  • Lore Background: A heavily armored assault mech designed to carry a wide range of weapons and remain steadfast despite fire. It is known for its superior armor and redundancy.
  • Special features: Versatile firing angle. In many variants it carries LRMs for range as well as SRMs and energy weapons for close combat. It often serves as a second-line fire support that can also survive in close combat (if necessary).

3. zeus (ZEU-9S / ZEU-6S)

  • Class: Assault (80 tons)
  • Lore Background: A commonly used command mech in the armies of the Inner Sphere, particularly the Lyran Alliance. The Zeus is a well-balanced generalist with good speed for its class.
  • Special features: All-rounder. It has a mixture of autocannons and missile launchers and serves as a flexible defender and flank guard in this lance. Its speed allows it to react quickly to threats approaching the firing line.

4. trebuchet (TBT-5N / TBT-7M)

  • Class: Medium (50 tons)
  • Lore background: A mobile medium mech that serves in its main role as a medium-heavy missile carrier.
  • Special features: Speed and spotting ability. The Trebuchet is the fastest mech in this pack. Its primary role is spotting for the slower, heavy artillery units (Longbow and Stalker) and providing flexible, complementary fire support.

3. the formation: role in the Alpha Strike

3.1. Focus on the formation

  • Name of the formation: Inner Sphere Fire Lance
  • Definition & Purpose: The Fire Lance specializes in concentrating overwhelming firepower on a single point or systematically wearing down the enemy with indirect fire (IF) before they even reach the main force. It operates best from a distance.
  • Alpha Strike Special Pilot Ability (SPA) / Ability: Indirect Fire (IF) is the key mechanic of this lance.

3.2. Tactical use of the formation

  • Primary strategy: Take up position and attrition (Siege Warfare). The Lance positions itself on elevated positions or behind lines of sight and utilizes the (IF) potential of the Longbow and Stalker. The aim is to force the opponent to perform inefficient maneuvers or to take damage over long distances.
  • Synergies in the pack:
    • Spotter: The agile trebuchet is the ideal spotter. It keeps its distance, moves into position to provide visibility and uses its mobility to evade enemy flank attacks.
    • Damage Dealer (Range): Longbow and Stalker form the backbone of firepower. The Longbow maximizes ranged damage, while the Stalker provides a robust second line that can fire both indirectly and directly.
    • Flank protection/flexibility: The Zeus serves as a “bodyguard” and command unit. It can intercept fast threats approaching the Trebuchet or stationary Longbow, or supplement some of the long-range fire.
  • Movement and Positioning: The Longbow and Stalker stay in cover, ideally in hull-down positions or behind woods to increase their TMM (Target Movement Modifier) or improve their armor value through cover. The Trebuchet and Zeus are mobile and move quickly to maintain optimal firing angles.
  • Key unit: The longbow is the lynch pin. As long as it fires, the lance is a threat. It must be protected at all costs.

4. integration into the larger army

Supplement for other Lances/Stars

The Fire Lance is a gap-filling formation that massively improves almost any large army, as it provides the rare and vital Indirect Fire (IF) points.

  • Fills the gap: It solves the problem of the lack of ranged damage in melee-heavy armies (such as an Inner Sphere Battle Lance or Striker Lance).
  • Optimal combination:
    • Recon Lance: A fast Recon Lance (e.g. with Jenner or Valkyrie) serves as a dedicated, hard-to-hit spotter for the Fire Lance, allowing the Trebuchet to use its firepower by itself.
    • Battle Lance: While the Battle Lance (e.g. Warhammer, Rifleman ) holds the front line and forces the enemy into range of the Fire Lance, the latter can decimate the enemy formations from behind undisturbed.

Point value analysis (PV)

With three assault mechs, the Fire Lance is an expensive purchase (typically between 180 and 230 PV, depending on the exact variants and pilots). However, its value lies in its efficiency: it delivers high damage without having to take damage itself, as long as the positioning is right.

5 Conclusion and evaluation

Brief summary

The Inner Sphere Fire Lance is a powerful force pack that offers a high learning curve but an even higher damage output. It is slow, but its firepower is devastating. Its strength lies not in its mobility, but in its ability to shape the battlefield by making areas inaccessible to the enemy.

Overall assessment

This pack is a must-have for any Inner Sphere player looking to add a dedicated artillery component to their army. It is ideal for advanced players and tacticians who prefer to strategically position their mechs rather than throw them straight into close combat.
