Vehicles (CV) in BattleTech Alpha Strike: ilClan Era

Tank Mania in the ilClan Era: How Available Are Vehicles (CV) in BattleTech Alpha Strike, Really?

When people think of BattleTech, they usually immediately picture skyscraper-tall, grinding BattleMechs. But anyone who’s played a few rounds of Alpha Strike knows: Without the right support units, even the most modern Mech quickly becomes a wreck. Especially in the ilClan era (3151+), conventional vehicles (Combat Vehicles, or CVs for short) are experiencing a renaissance on the battlefield.

I took a very close look at the current Master Unit List (MUL) database for the ilClan era. The result is impressive: 1,216 combat vehicles are officially registered—and each of the 31 playable factions has its own fleet of vehicles!

But which tanks do you actually see on almost every gaming table, and how does the selection of vehicles differ between the Great Houses, mercenaries, the Periphery, and the Clans? Let’s take a closer look at the numbers and tactical options.

The All-Purpose Vehicles: What’s in Almost Every Army?

Interestingly, the most widespread vehicles across all factions fall into two categories: reliable combat vehicles for the front lines and ubiquitous troop transports or reconnaissance vehicles.

Here’s an overview of the best-known true combat vehicles by size class and their prevalence among the 31 factions:

The Unsung Heroes

In addition to these combat vehicles, there are also the all-time favorites: standard APCs (hover, tracked, wheeled) and supply vehicles like the MASH truck are available in all 31 factions. If you want to get your infantry safely to their destination, there’s hardly any way around them.

The Vehicle Landscape: How Are the CVs Distributed Among the Factions?

The 1,216 variants are by no means distributed evenly. Depending on their doctrine and historical background, the 31 factions of the ilClan era can be divided into four distinct groups:

1. Major Houses & IS Successor States (The Gigantic Arsenals)

The Inner Sphere has always relied on the principle of combined arms. Even the new splinter states that have emerged in the former occupation zones are making full use of this potential:

  • Lyran Commonwealth: 495 variants (178 chassis) – the leader in tank units!
  • Federated Suns: 488 variants (175 chassis)
  • Tamar Pact: 450 variants (169 chassis)
  • Vesper Marches: 445 variants (168 chassis)
  • Capellan Confederation: 424 variants (168 chassis)
  • Draconis Combine: 418 variants (157 chassis)
  • Free Worlds League: 418 variants (162 chassis)
  • Duchy of Andurien (FWL): 385 variants (150 chassis)

2. Mercenaries & Independent Forces (Pure Diversity)

If you have money, you can buy what you need. Mercenaries make use of whatever the free market or the battlefield has to offer:

  • Mercenary (Total Mercenary Pool): 480 variants (188 chassis)— the absolute widest variety of chassis in the entire game!
  • Solaris 7: 293 variants (113 chassis)
  • Pirates: 222 variants (87 chassis)
  • Wolf’s Dragoons: 119 variants (58 chassis)
  • Kell Hounds: 108 variants (54 chassis)

3. The Periphery (Reliable Mid-Range & Militia Chassis)

In the outlying regions, mechs are rare and expensive. Vehicles often form the backbone of homeland defense here:

  • Magistracy of Canopus: 297 variants (119 chassis)
  • Fronc Reaches: 274 variants (106 chassis)
  • Taurian Concordat: 263 variants (103 chassis)
  • Filtvelt Coalition: 258 variants (100 chassis)
  • Marian Hegemony: 252 variants (99 chassis)
  • Calderon Protectorate: 234 variants (91 chassis)

4. Clans & Clan Empires (Skepticism, but Understanding)

Traditionally, Clan warriors prefer BattleMechs and Elementals. Nevertheless, most Clan empires of the ilClan era field an average of between 160 and 250 vehicle variants—led by the ilClan Wolf and the vehicle-oriented Hell’s Horses:

  • Wolf Clan: 254 variants (121 chassis)
  • Clan Smoke Jaguar: 211 variants (96 chassis)
  • Rasalhague Dominion: 211 variants (97 chassis)
  • Clan Jade Falcon: 205 variants (101 chassis)
  • Clan Hell’s Horses: 193 variants (95 chassis)
  • Wolf Empire: 188 variants (91 chassis)
  • Clan Protectorate: 180 variants (99 chassis)
  • Raven Alliance: 167 variants (89 chassis)
  • Jade Falcon Remnant: 166 variants (92 chassis)
  • Alyina Mercantile League: 162 variants (91 chassis)
  • Sea Fox Clan: 160 variants (86 chassis)
  • Scorpion Empire: 91 variants (53 chassis)— the most remote arsenal with the fewest CVs in the game.

My take on your Alpha Strike squad

In Alpha Strike, vehicles are no longer just a stopgap measure—they’re essential power multipliers for your army. Whether you’re looking for inexpensive ways to fill out your points, want to quickly move infantry to mission objectives, or need to deal devastating indirect damage—the ilClan era offers you an unparalleled selection. If you rely solely on mechs here, you’re leaving a huge amount of tactical potential on the table!
