The “Inner Line” Tactics in Alpha Strike: The Shortest Path to Victory
If you want to win at tabletop gaming, you rarely rely solely on the dice. It’s your positioning that determines whether you’ll triumph or see your own forces completely routed. Today I’d like to talk to you about an absolute classic of military history that translates perfectly to the hex-free battlefields of BattleTech Alpha Strike: the interior lines tactic.
This tactic is as old as the art of war itself—Napoleon used it to rout armies. But how does the concept hold up when BattleMechs weighing several metric tons clash instead of French infantry? Spoiler: Damn well 🙂
What is the “inner line tactic”?
The basic principle is simple but highly effective. When two sides face off and the opponent spreads out his forces (e.g., to flank you), you should position your forces in the center of the battlefield.
Since you are at the center of the action, your routes to any point on the front line are shorter than those of your opponent, who must move around you on the outside.
The core principle: You use the geometry of the battlefield to your advantage. While your opponent has to take long, circuitous routes to coordinate their units, you shift the focus of the battle with minimal movement.

Pros and Cons of the Alpha Strike Game Table
Like any tactical formation, the inner line is not a foolproof “auto-win” button. It requires discipline and a keen eye for the opponent’s intentions.
| Advantages | Disadvantages |
| Local Superiority: You can quickly concentrate all your firepower on an isolated part of the enemy army (Focus Fire). | Risk of being surrounded: If you’re not careful, you’ll come under fire from all sides at once. |
| Quick response times: If a flank is in danger of being breached, reinforcements will be on the scene within one or two rounds. | Loss of board control: You leave the edges to your opponent early on, and with them, often valuable cover and space. |
| Mission Objective: Dominance— Since many scenarios award points for holding the center, you’re sitting right on a gold mine. | Vulnerability to AOE: Mechs clustered closely together are easy targets for artillery (Arrow IV) or bombs. |
Here’s How to Successfully Implement This Tactic in Alpha Strike
In Alpha Strike, movement is everything. Since the game is significantly faster and deadlier than classic BattleTech, you’ll need to execute your inner line strategy precisely, from the deployment phase all the way to the final shot.
1. The Right Lance Composition (The “Anvil” Strategy)
You need a team that can apply pressure in the middle while also withstanding pressure.
- The key: Rely on heavy and storm mechs with solid armor and high damage efficiency at mediumrange. An Atlas, Awesome, or Dire Wolf in the center forces the opponent to play defensively.
- The Reaction Forces: Add one or two fast Mechs (e.g., Wraith or Phoenix Hawk) to the mix. These Mechs take full advantage of the short distances on the inner line to rush in at lightning speed and provide support wherever the enemy lets its guard down.
2. The Setup Phase: Casting the Bait
Place your units in a compact formation in the central area of your deployment zone. Your opponent will instinctively try to bypass you and attack from the flanks. That’s exactly what you want. Let him run all the way down the wings. While his left flank still needs two laps to get into the optimal position, you’re already attacking his right flank with your entire force.
3. The Movement Phase: “Swiveling”
The biggest risk with this tactic is that you’ll turn your back on your opponents. Don’t use your movement to run toward the opponent; instead, use it to pivot toward the center.
- Imagine your army as the hub of a wheel. The enemy is running along the outer rim.
- You only need topivot slightly to always keep your front armor facing the most dangerous enemy.
4. The Combat Phase: Annihilation Through Concentrated Fire
This is when the tactic really shines. Since all your mechs are standing close together, they usually have the same line of sight (LOS) and can concentrate their fire.
Take full advantage of this. There’s no point in spreading your damage. Pick out the enemy’s most dangerous, isolated target and eliminate it completely before reinforcements from the other flank can intervene. In Alpha Strike, a mech with just 1 structure point left still fires at full power. So: Take it out completely!
Conclusion: Who is this tactic best suited for?
I especially recommend the inner-line strategy to players who like to stay in control and don’t want to rely on risky maneuvers along the edges of the battlefield. It’s more forgiving of minor movement errors than an aggressive flanking strategy, since your units can always provide cover for one another.
Just be damn careful when the enemy brings mobile artillery or LRM boats with indirect fire (IF) onto the battlefield—anyone standing rigid as a board in the center will quickly become a target.
