Unit Profile: The Harlequins of Canopus
(Official Registry Name: Harlequin Mercenary Regiment)
“Color is not the camouflage of the fearful. It is the banner of those who look you straight in the eye while the sky collapses above you.” > — Gynarch Vivienne Marceau
This is a unit that I, as a player (mech strategist), came up with and created myself. Since my favorite mercenaries, the Canopian Highlanders 3101, were wiped out, and I need a unit to play with in the latest era.

1. The Tragedy of Cate’s Hold (Founded in 3102)
In the year 3101, the storied Canopian Highlanders on the planet Cate’s Hold were attacked by a surprisingly well-equipped group of pirates. The pirates employed brutal and deadly tactics and used a nuclear weapon against the Highlanders’ positions. The unit was effectively destroyed as a result.
While the vast majority of the few survivors were subsequently integrated into the First Magistracy Highlanders, two officers chose to go their own way:
- Vivienne “Vixen” Marceau: An experienced Highlanders mech warrior who narrowly survived the nuclear strike just on the edge of the detonation zone.
- Dr. Tariq “Shadow” Al-Jamil: A brilliant mind in cyber warfare and electronic reconnaissance who was forced to watch the destruction of his comrades unfold on the radar screens.
In the wake of the trauma at Cate’s Hold, the two 3102s reached a fundamental decision: They did not want to be integrated into rigid military structures again. And above all: Never again would a unit blindly walk into a trap during direct combat. They founded The Harlequins of Canopus with the goal of building a highly mobile, electronically protected force specializing in C3-supported Indirect Fire (IF) —to destroy enemies at maximum range before they even come within range of their heaviest weapons.
2. Ethos: Matriarchy, Democracy, and Loyalty to Canopus
The culture of the Harlequins is not a product of chance, but the direct result of Canopian social philosophy, combined with the bitter experiences of their founders on Cate’s Hold. This unity combines the Canopian Magistrate’s belief in social progress with the egalitarian spirit of Scottish Highlander clan traditions.
2.1. The Gynarchic Structure (Gynarchy)
In the tradition of the Magistrate—which, since its founding in the 26th century by Eve Dunian, has been governed as a progressive matriarchal republic—the highest strategic and operational command lies in the hands of women:
- The Gynarch: At the helm is the most senior commander (Gynarch Vivienne Marceau). She represents the unit to the outside world, conducts negotiations with employers, and has the final say in military emergencies on the battlefield.
- The Officers’ Council of Mothers & Sisters: Key positions in logistics, medicine, and technology are primarily filled by women. This is based on the Canopian belief that strategic foresight, social cohesion, and the protection of resources are best served by female leadership.
- Equality without exclusion: Men—such as co-founder Dr. Tariq Al-Jamil—are by no means second-class citizens. They hold prominent specialist roles (such as leading electronic warfare or intelligence operations) and enjoy full respect and the right to advancement. However, in keeping with the Canopian concept of the state, the highest political and military decision-making authority remains firmly rooted in gynarchy.
2.2. Grassroots Democratic Code & Collective Agreement
While iron discipline reigns on the battlefield, the internal workings of the Harlequins away from combat differ drastically from the often authoritarian mercenary groups of the Inner Sphere:
- Voting Rights for All Ranks: Following the model of the Canopian Parliament, every member of the unit—from tech apprentices to battle-armor infantrywomen to mech warriors—has one vote on policy decisions.
- Contract Negotiation: Before a mercenary contract is signed, the unit decides on the terms through a democratic process. Risks, the division of spoils, repair clauses, and moral concerns are discussed openly.
- Social Safety Net: Modeled after Canopus’s advanced health and education systems, 15% of all mercenary income is allocated to a dedicated welfare and care fund. Wounded veterans, orphans, and retired technicians receive lifelong support from the unit.
2.3. The Canopus Oath: Honor & Pragmatism
The Harlequins see themselves as an unofficial, extended arm of the Magistrate. While many mercenaries in the Inner Sphere display nothing more than five-cent loyalty, the Harlequins’ stance is unshakable:
- The Absolute Prohibition: Under no circumstances will a contract be accepted that is directly or indirectly contrary to the interests of the Canopus Magistracy, the House of Centrella, or Canopian colonies.
- Preferential Terms for Patriots: Contracts for the Canopian Armed Forces (CAF) or intelligence operations conducted by the Magistrate are always given priority and are often executed at rates well below standard market prices.
- Shadow Diplomacy: Since the Magistrate is often required to maintain peaceful and diplomatic relations officially, the Harlequins act as a “buffer.” They carry out dirty or covert tasks along the borders with the Capellans or the Marian Hegemony—tasks for which House Centrella cannot assume any governmental responsibility.
3. The Secret: The “C3 Phantom Network”
The Harlequins employ a highly complex, multi-layered network on the battlefield. A large portion of their units are interconnected via C3 (Command, Control, and Communications) systems, enabling an extremely lethal combat doctrine:
- Reconnaissance & Close-Range Spotting: Light and agile mechs, as well as Battle Armor infantry, penetrate deep into enemy positions. As soon as a spotter gets close to an enemy mech with his C3 slave computer (or marks it with TAG / NARK ), he feeds the exact distance data into the network in real time.
- Electronic Shield: Dr. Al-Jamil’s specialized ECM suites are running at full capacity. Not only do they jam enemy radar systems and generate decoy signals, but they also use encrypted frequency-hopping technology to make their own C3 network immune to enemy ECM jamming.
- The mathematically perfect rain of steel: The heavy LRM mechs and artillery tanks are positioned at a distance, in absolute cover behind hills or canyons. Thanks to the C3 data from the spotter, their fire control system calculates the shot as if the heavy rocket boats were standing directly in front of the target. The LRM salvos rain down on the surprised enemy with surgical precision viaindirect fire.
The Secret of Unity: It is unknown where the Harlequins obtain the coveted C3 components and high-frequency transceivers in the midst of the Dark Age. Rumors point to covert technology transfers from the Capellan Confederation—or to salvaged materials from old Star League depots.
4. The Color Scheme: “The Colorful Storm” (Color Paneling)
The color scheme is inspired by the “Flying Circus” of World War I, but is extremely practical and particularly easy for tabletop gamers (Alpha Strike & Classic) to implement:
Lore Rationale
“Field repairs have to be done quickly. When a Harlequin mech gets a new armor plate, the technicians simply grab the next available plate—regardless of its primary color. There are no complicated camouflage patterns—just bold, broad contrasts. From a distance, this breaks up the mech’s silhouette and confuses the human eye.”

Optics & Painting Guide
- Panel Painting: Individual components/armor plates are painted in distinct, different base colors (e.g., torso in magenta, right arm/leg in sunny yellow, left side in cyan/turquoise).
- Accents: Heads and LRM launchers are often painted in highly distinctive white or gold.
- Splatter Look: After painting, use a toothbrush or an old bristle brush to flick fine splatters of paint, which imitates battle damage in a “colorful circus” style and perfectly conceals any painting mistakes.
5. Unit Structure & Equipment (as of the 3100s Dark Age and IlClan)
The Harlequins have evolved into a highly specializedcombined-arms task force consisting of two full companies:
1st Company: The “Circus Lance” (16 BattleMechs – no vehicles)
The Mech company is the heart of the unit and is divided into four specialized lances (4 Mechs each):
- 1. Lance: The “Thunder Guard” (Heavy & Assault Lance / IF Firebase)
- Focus: Massive LRM support, heavy firepower from the second line.
- Typical Mechs: Stalker (LRM variants), Catapult, Archer, Longbow, or Highlander (equipped with missiles).
- 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Lances: The “Spring Devils” (12 Light and Medium Mechs)
- Focus: Maximum speed, jump capability (jump jets), TAG target designator, ECM, and NARK launcher.
- Role: Rapid advances, reconnaissance, and target designation. They use their jump jets to traverse rough terrain, establish visual contact, and feed target data to the 1st Lance for indirect fire.
- Typical Mechs: Anubis (with TAG), Phoenix Hawk, Griffin (LRM variants), Shadow Hawk, Spider, Locust.
2nd Company: The “Shadow Guard” (Support Company)
This company supplements the mechs’ indirect fire with specialized artillery and infantry support. This company is still being formed.
- Artillery & Tank Platoon (4 vehicles):
- 2× LRM carriers (for devastating indirect area fire).
- 2× Schrek PPC carriers or Pegasus hovercraft (equipped with TAG/NARK for mobile target designation).
- Battle Armor Platoon (4 squads / 16 battle suits):
- Equipped with Quirinus Battle Armor [MG] (Sqd4) (specially manufactured by the Magistrate, equipped with portable TAG systems).
- They sneak into enemy positions to act as hiddenforward observers, directing the mechs’ indirect fire with millimeter precision.
- Tank Platoon (4 vehicles):
- Modified Mobile HQ vehicles, equipped with battlefield computers that process target data from spotters in a flash and transmit it to the mechs’ LRM launchers.
6. Logistics: The Merry Jester
To transport this entire force (16 BattleMechs, 6 vehicles, 16 Battle Armor soldiers, and technician crews), the Harlequins use their heavily modified Union-class landing ship (with expanded cargo capacity) named The Merry Jester.
Like the mechs, the ship’s hull is painted with a striking, large-scale panel pattern—when The Merry Jester enters the atmosphere, the enemy sees the Harlequins’ colorful banner in the sky even before the first salvos of missiles rise from behind the horizon.
7. The Battle of Booker—A Short Story
The frost of December 3112 lay like a rigid crust over the barren outpost on Booker.
The wailing warning signal from the command post still echoed in Vivienne “Vixen” Marceau’s ears. No warm awakening, no cup of hot coffee, no warning. On the edge of the system—at an illegal pirate outpost—an unidentified jump ship had broken out of hyperspace. Three drop ships were already burning through the atmosphere, while half the Harlequins were still partying in the Magistrate’s entertainment districts.
Now only a handful of ships stood between the pirates’ landing zones and the unprotected civilian areas.
Vivienne tightened the straps in the cockpit of her 90-metric-ton Cyclops CP-11-G. Three markers lit up on the HUD in front of her: Captain Vance’s Clint CLNT-5U, a nimble Locust LCT-5W2, and the heavy Crusader CRD-6M. The garish, asymmetrical color scheme of their mechs—magenta, sun yellow, and cyan, dotted with colorful splashes—stood out as bizarrely as a blot of colorful ink against the cold, gray wasteland.
“Reinforcements are on the way, Commander!” the technician on duty’s voice rattled over the helmet radio. “But they’ll need at least twenty minutes!”
“We don’t have twenty minutes,” Vivienne growled. “Lance—Battle Formation Alpha. Hold the line!”
On a snowy hill five hundred meters ahead, heavy outlines emerged from the fog. A Marauder MAR-7D. Before Vivienne could even align the target acquisition computer, a blinding blue-and-white flash streaked through the frosty air. The Marauder’s ER-heavy laser gouged deep into the Clint’s left shoulder. Sparks flew; ceramic armor melted like wax. Vance’s mech lurched to a halt, regaining its footing with a wobble, but its armor gauge was already flashing dark red.
“I’m still here!” Vance shouted over the ether.
The Lanza returned fire in a flash. LRMs from the Crusader and heavy Gauss shots from Vivienne’s Cyclops rained down on the Marauder, but the projectiles merely grazed its hardened front armor.
Before Vivienne could bellow another command, a triple burst of light ripped across the horizon. Three blinding salvos from particle cannons pierced the Crusader’s torso with pinpoint accuracy. The force of the impacts sent the seventy-metric-ton mech flying off its feet. It crashed backward into the icy ground, its legs stretched out motionless. No muzzle flash had been visible.
“Gideon! Come in!” Vivienne shouted into the microphone.
Nothing. Just dead, static-free silence.
From the hollow behind the Marauder, a low, tracked silhouette emerged: a Schrek PPC Carrier. A fast-moving tank armed with three heavy particle cannons.
“They’re flanking us!” shouted the Locust’s pilot. The light mech and the damaged Clint began a quick encircling maneuver, but the pirates acted with deadly efficiency. The Marauder expertly covered the Carrier, and its precise barrage mercilessly kept the Harlequins’ two lighter mechs at bay.
A new alarm signal blared on Vivienne’s tactical screen. Another red icon appeared—straight out of the clouds.
A Warhammer WHM-9D.
With its jump jets roaring, the 70-metric-ton mech sliced through the cold air, landing with a thunderous ground tremor just under eighty meters in front of Vivienne’s Cyclops and unleashing a devastating broadside at point-blank range.
KSR missiles, laser bursts, and machine-gun fire pounded the Cyclops’s chest plate. The cockpit swung back and forth like a pendulum that had been struck. Vivienne’s head slammed against the headrest; the taste of blood was metallic on her tongue. Warning lights flooded the display with a red wave: WARNING: STRUCTURAL DAMAGE TO TORSO. REACTOR COOLING LINE DAMAGED.
“Vance! Abort the flanking maneuver, fall back! I need fire support!” Vivienne shouted breathlessly.
Her eyes were fixed on the tactical display. Vance in the Clint and the Locust were too far away—cut off by the Schrek tank’s barrage. They’d never make it in time.
The Warhammer took a step closer. The muzzles of its heavy weapons were still glowing from the heat as it aimed its torso weapons directly at the Cyclops’ cockpit. The pilot of the pirate mech was about to carry out the death sentence.
The warning device in the cockpit burst into a continuous shriek. Vivienne clenched her hands around the control sticks. This is it, she thought, as the giant’s shadow crashed down upon her.
At that very moment, a battered, limping shadow flickered at the edge of her field of vision.
Clint, whom everyone had believed dead.
Its armor hung in ragged strips from its limbs, thick smoke billowed from its vents, but the engine roared to life. With a mechanical groan, the machine pushed itself up out of the snow, aligned its wobbling arm, and fired its Maxell ER heavy laser and ER medium laser at point-blank range directly into the unprotected rear armor of thesurprised Warhammer…
