Short Stories from City Hall

Before we dive right into these ten short stories, grab yourself a cold drink. If you know BattleTech mainly from the classic rulebooks, gloomy Lore videos, or the dusty battlefields of the Succession Wars, you might easily believe that the Inner Sphere consists only of grumpy generals, dead-serious MechWarriors, and endless piles of steel scrap.

But hey: there’s a corner of space where things are completely different. Welcome to the Magistracy of Canopus!

To help you really enjoy the following stories—even if you haven’t rolled a single dice in Canopian space yet—here’s a quick crash course on the three major characteristics of this state:

1. Women in Power (The Matriarchy) Since its founding in the 26th century, women have been in charge of the Magistrate. At the top stands the Magistra. While elsewhere proud feudal lords fight over succession to the throne, Canopus is ruled with an iron fist under a matriarchal system—from high-level politics all the way up to the cockpits of the heaviest mechs. The men here are completely laid-back and happy with the arrangement, but when it comes to strategy, negotiation skills, and calling the shots in the hangar, they simply leave the reins to the more capable gender.

2. Parties, Poker, and Fun as State Doctrine While the Great Houses prefer to burn through their money on massive military projects, Canopus has carved out the most lucrative niche in the galaxy: entertainment, casinos, and recreation. Worlds like Hardcore or Canopus IV are essentially the Las Vegas of the 31st century. The Canopian philosophy is wonderfully pragmatic: Why wage grueling wars when you can simply lure the enemy into the spa area, treat them to the finest hospitality, and, while they’re completely relaxed, slip their C-Bills right out of their pockets?

3. High-Tech Medicine & Glitzy Cybernetics If you party hard, you need good doctors. That’s why the Magistrate is the undisputed hub for cutting-edge medicine, plastic surgery, and out-there cybernetics. Bionic implants aren’t just installed here after serious injuries—people treat themselves to them just for the sake of it, because they look damn good under the club’s spotlights. From genetically engineered giant cats to glowing cyber-arms, anything that’s fun and makes money goes.

So for the next ten stories, forget about the stiff seriousness of the Successor States. In the Magistrate, problems are solved with charm, a dash of bureaucracy, excellent cocktails, and—if there’s absolutely no other way—with an extremely stylishly painted mech.

Enjoy the read!

10 Humorous Short Stories 🙂

1. The Joy Audit

Captain Valeria kicked through the thick leather cushion of her armchair. As an inspector for the Municipal Ministry of Health, she had to apply the strictest standards on Canopus IV. Standing before her was Marcus, the visibly nervous manager of the upscale establishment “The Dancing Catachan Woman.”

“Good afternoon, Mr. Manager,” Valeria purred, tapping her clipboard with her pen. “Your establishment is in violation of Section 4, Paragraph 12 of the Cultural Well-Being Act.”

Marcus turned pale. “Inspector! We pay our taxes on time! Our ventilation is top-notch, and the dancers’ cyber-implants have just been serviced!”

“That’s not the issue,” Valeria said sternly. “Your sparkling wine menu offers only two varieties of vintage champagne from the Capellan Confederation imports. That’s unacceptable for our guests! Where is the locally pressed nectar specialty from Duniansford? And why is the room lighting set to 80 lux? That ruins the intimate atmosphere! If it isn’t dimmed to 40 lux by tomorrow, I’ll shut the place down for posing an acute threat to guests’ well-being.”

Marcus breathed a sigh of relief. “I’ll take care of it right away! Would you like a massage gift certificate on the house?”

Valeria smiled gently and packed up the clipboard. “You’d better use it yourself—you look terribly stressed. But yes, give me two.”

2. The Quota Woman in the Cockpit

Private Julian was proud. He had passed the recruitment tests for the Magistrate’s Military Guards. But as he stood on the hangar deck on his first day, the reality of the Canopian matriarchy dawned on him.

Standing before him was Commander Helen, a vision of silk, battle medals, and iron authority. “All right, Recruit Julian. So you’re our new technical assistant for the Shadow Hawk Lance.”

“Actually, ma’am, I’m a trained MechWarrior! I graduated from the Academy at Magistracy Center with honors!” he said in his defense.

Helen raised an eyebrow. “A man at the wheel of a 55-metric-ton war machine? Julian, honey, who’s supposed to fine-tune the cockpit cooling system then? Women have a much better feel for the complex sensors. Besides, you men always forget to adjust the mirrors in the cockpit.”

“But I can shoot!” Julian insisted.

“That’s what all men think until they get their first scratch in the paint,” Helen sighed. “Listen: You can reload the LRM-20 ammunition. And if you do it right, next month you can drive the guard’s UrbanMech at a walking pace across Parade Square. But only if you buckle your seatbelt.”

3. The Visa for Pleasure Island

Mercenary Captain Vane of Vane’s Veterans was sweating in the lobby of the Canopian Immigration Office. He simply wanted to station his troops on the resort and entertainment world of Hardcore to boost the unit’s morale.

The clerk behind the counter—an older woman with her hair pinned up and glittery nails—looked through her reading glasses. “Captain Vane. Your residency application includes 40 heavily armed men and… only two women?”

“Yes, ma’am! We’re a tough mercenary unit!” Vane replied proudly.

The official shook her head sadly. “You won’t get a visa like that. The testosterone-to-testosterone ratio is a disaster. Who’s going to attend all those gala evenings? Who’s going to sign up for the dance classes? Your men will get bored within three days and start bar fights. That’ll ruin business at the casino.”

“We can maintain discipline!” Vane pleaded.

“No, no,” the official waved him off. “I’ll classify you under the ‘Entertainment Novices’ category. You’ll get a visa, on one condition: each of your soldiers must provide proof of at least three spa treatments and two theater visits per week. You’ll get a stamp at the exit. Have fun in paradise.”

4. Cyberware at a Special Price

On the world of Joppa, the black market for cybernetics was thriving. Dr. Aaron, a former scientist from the Lyran Commonwealth, had settled in the Magistrate to finally work “free from moral constraints.”

A young Canopian entered the office. “Doc, I need an upgrade! I want stronger arms so I can perform in the ‘Hardcore’ act at the circus!”

Aaron rubbed his hands together. “No problem! I’ve got some cybernetic servo-muscles from House Steiner right here. Extremely durable, bulletproof, can withstand 200 metric tons!”

The customer grimaced. “What does that look like? So clunky? Don’t you have anything more elegant? Maybe with built-in LED strips that change color to the beat of the music?”

Aaron blinked. “LED strips? That’s combat gear, not party lighting!”

“Doc, we’re at the Magistrate’s here,” the boy lectured him. “If my cybernetic hand doesn’t glow in the dark while I’m pouring cocktails, the whole audience will laugh at me! And please build a perfume atomizer into my ring finger, too.”

Aaron sighed deeply, set the armor plates aside, and reached for the soldering iron to work on the glittery wire.

5. The Capellan Misunderstanding

A Capellan diplomat named Liao-Tao was on a diplomatic mission to conduct alliance talks with the Magistra. He was prepared for anything: poisonings, espionage, political intrigues.

When he was received at the palace, the protocol officer handed him a glass of bubbling liquid with a little umbrella. “Welcome to Magistracy Center, Your Excellency. Please take off your boots; we’ll go to the hot tub first.”

Liao-Tao narrowed his eyes. “Is this a metaphor for the political negotiations? A test of my resolve?”

“No, that’s a whirlpool with eucalyptus added,” the female officer replied with a smile. “The Magistra is only receiving visitors in the spa area today. It relaxes the muscles and ensures that the contracts are signed much more smoothly.”

“I’m here to negotiate border security and troop contingents!” the diplomat exclaimed indignantly.

“We can discuss that while applying a cucumber face mask,” she replied, unimpressed. “If you refuse, we’ll unfortunately have to postpone the negotiations. The Magistra has a manicure appointment at four o’clock.”

Liao-Tao swallowed, glanced at his stiff uniform, and slowly began to loosen his tie.

6. The Cat of Canopus

Marek, a merchant from the Taurian Concordat, could no longer make sense of the world. He wanted to sell a shipment of grain on the agricultural world of Detroit. But the customs officer blocked the cargo.

“I’m sorry, Mr. Taurian,” said the customs officer, petting a huge, fluffy creature on her lap. “The grain won’t clear customs until Princess Schnuffel gives her approval.”

“Princess Schnuffel?! That’s a genetically modified Canopian giant cat hybrid!” Marek shouted.

“She’s the official quality inspector for this station!” the official corrected him sternly. “If Princess Schnuffel sniffs your sacks of grain and sneezes, it means the mold count is too high. That’s been scientifically proven.”

Marek stared at the animal. The big cat blinked lazily, stepped onto one of the sacks, sniffed it thoroughly—and then settled down right on top of it, purring, to sleep.

The official smiled. “Congratulations! The shipment has been approved. However, you may not move the sack until the princess has finished sleeping. That could take about four hours.”

7. Tax Return, Hardcore Style

Bureaucracy at City Hall was different from the rest of the Inner Sphere. Tax official Lian sat in his office reviewing nightclub owner Viktor’s tax return.

“Mr. Viktor,” said Lian, shaking his head. “You reported almost no taxes for the last quarter. How do you explain that?”

Viktor smiled charmingly. “Well, my dear friend, I have high operating expenses! I had to spend 50,000 C-Bills on sequined costumes, another 30,000 on fog machines, and an astronomical sum on exclusive massage oils!”

Lian tapped away on his calculator. “Massage oils fall under the category of ‘essential work supplies’—that’s tax-deductible. Sequin costumes, too, as long as they serve to beautify the cityscape. But what about this entry here? ‘100,000 C-Bills for champagne pyramids’?”

“That was a donation for the general public’s enjoyment!” Viktor declared proudly.

Lian nodded thoughtfully. “That’s right, Section 88: ‘Investments in the good spirits of citizens.’ I’m granting you a tax refund of 5,000 C-Bills. Please spend the money immediately at the nearest casino.”

8. An Atlas in the Spotlight

The arenas of Solaris VII were famous for blood and iron. The arenas on Canopus IV, however, had different priorities.

MechWarrior Garth piloted his 100-metric-ton Atlas into the arena. He expected an epic battle against a BattleMaster. Instead, 3000s-era disco music blared from the massive speakers, and colorful beams of light danced across the armor of his combat machine.

“What the hell…?” Garth muttered over the radio.

The referee spoke up: “Welcome to the Saturday Night Gala! Tonight we’re not just judging damage—we’re also awarding points for style and elegance! MechWarrior Garth, your Atlas is way too gray. Where’s the glamour?”

Suddenly, the enemy BattleMaster shot around the corner. He was completely covered in chrome paint and had gigantic feather boas attached to his shoulder armor. The opponent executed an astonishingly smooth spin and fired two bursts of pink-tinted laser beams just past Garth.

The crowd cheered wildly.

“9.5 points for the choreography!” boomed the announcer.

Garth groaned, switched his Atlas’s headlights to flashing mode, and tried to rock his colossus to the beat of the bass.

9. The Diplomatic Weapon

At a conference of the Periphery states, a Taurian diplomat and a Capellan ambassador were arguing loudly over mining rights. Fists were almost flying, and the atmosphere had hit rock bottom.

The Canopian ambassador, Lady Evelyn, leaned back relaxed and sipped her cocktail. Finally, she beckoned her assistants over.

“Girls,” she whispered. “Time for some Canopian special diplomacy.”

Five minutes later, gentle music filled the negotiating room. Waitresses brought in platters of exquisite appetizers, aromatic e-pipes, and ice-cold drinks. Two therapists began massaging the angry Taurian’s aching shoulder muscles.

“What… what’s this?” stammered the Taurian as his head slowly sank backward. “I won’t be bribed!”

“No one’s bribing you, darling,” Evelyn whispered, handing him a piece of paper. “We’re just easing the tension. Now just sign here so we can all make it to the spa gala on time.”

The Taurian sighed blissfully under the masseuse’s skilled hands, reached for the pen, and signed everything put before him.

10. The Patrol of Elegance

Police Officer Sarah was patrolling the streets of Krimari in her hovercar. At an intersection, she saw a man frantically trying to push his broken-down hovercar to the side of the road. He was wearing a wrinkled shirt and had unwashed hair.

Sarah turned on her blue light and pulled over. She got out, her hand resting lightly on the holster of her laser pistol.

“Good afternoon, sir,” she said sternly. “Do you know why I’m pulling you over?”

“My engine died!” the man cried desperately.

“I don’t care about the engine,” Sarah replied, pulling a small mirror out of her pocket. “Just take a look at yourself! Uncombed hair in public? An unironed shirt after 6 p.m.? That’s a serious violation of public appearance standards!”

“I had a long day at work!” protested the man.

“No excuses,” Sarah said sternly, tearing off a ticket. “A 50 C-Bills fine for aesthetic neglect. I’m also ordering you to get a fresh shave and a haircut at the nearest salon. If I see you like this again tomorrow, I’ll have your vehicle towed and you committed to a beauty salon!”
