Rules: AMS in BattleTech Alpha Strike

Missile Defense 101: Mastering the AMS Special Ability in BattleTech Alpha Strike

We’ve all been there: You maneuver your prized Heavy Mech into position, looking forward to a spectacular advance—and suddenly you’re met with the sly gaze of your opponent, who has half a dozen LRM platforms up his sleeve. But don’t panic! This is exactly where a small but extremely useful piece of high-tech comes into play: the Anti-Missile System (AMS).

In Alpha Strike: Commander’s Edition, the rule for the AMS is clearly defined, but it’s still often applied incorrectly at the gaming table. Today, I’ll show you exactly how this special ability works, which attacks it defends against, and what its tactical limitations are.

How does the Anti-Missile System (AMS) work?

The basic function of the AMS is very simple: It reduces the damage taken from missile-based attacks. As soon as your Mech or unit becomes the target of a missile salvo, the defense system automatically activates and shoots down the incoming missiles in mid-air.

The Core Rule According to Commander’s Edition

A Mech or unit with the AMS special ability reduces damage taken from certain missile attacks by 1 point (down to a minimum of 1 damage point).

AMS is effective against the following types of attacks:

  • Standard weapon attacks by units that possess the special abilities IF (Indirect Fire), SRM, or LRM.
  • Indirect Fire (IF), when the IF special ability is used for this purpose.
  • Special weapon attacks that are explicitly handled through the SRM or LRM capabilities(e.g., when using alternative ammunition).

Important Note on the Field of Fire (Arc):

The AMS only works against attacks coming from the unit’s front arc! The only exception: If the AMS is mounted on a unit in a turret (TUR), it provides all-around protection.

Practical Example at the Game Table

Imagine my Catapult is firing from a distance at your Mech, which has the AMS special ability listed on its unit card:.

  1. The Attack: I declare an attack on your front and roll successfully. My long-range damage value is 2 points.
  2. The AMS Effect: Since the attack comes from your front arc and is missile-based, your AMS reduces the damage by 1 point. So you only lose 1 point of armor.
  3. Minimum Damage: If my attack had caused only 1 point of damage, your AMS would still only reduce that damage to 1 point. The AMS can never completely neutralize a successful hit, bringing the damage down to 0 (minimum 1).

Example: A Catapult fires at a Crusader. Since the Catapult has the IF special ability, the Crusader’s AMS activates when it is attacked by the Catapult. This is true even if it is a direct attack (standard weapon attack) and not indirect fire.

Tactical Tips for Planning Your Roster

AMS isn’t expensive in terms of points, but it drastically skews the opponent’s damage calculations. This is especially true against faction-specific decks that rely heavily on missile boats.

  • The Perfect Frontline Breaker: Units equipped with AMS are ideal as the spearhead of your formation. Since the AMS operates at the front, it protects you precisely as you advance toward the enemy.
  • Watch out for flank attacks! Experienced players will try to maneuver around your AMS Mechs to get to your flanks or rear. Positioning is key!
  • Know its limits: AMS does not provide protection against energy or ballistic weapons (e.g., autocannons or laser units). The standard AMS is also ineffective against heavy artillery missiles (such as the Arrow IV).

Conclusion

PropertyAssessment
BenefitStrong against LRM-/SRM-heavy lists
LimitationFront arc only (except in the turret); damage never drops below 1
My Rating4 / 5 stars – A real lifesaver for melee fighters!

The Anti-Missile System in Alpha Strike is a fantastic tool for giving your units that extra bit of survivability. Attacker Mechs, in particular, that have to fight their way through enemy fire, benefit enormously from it. Just don’t forget to keep an eye on your mechs’ range in the heat of battle!
