Today we’re taking a look at a phenomenon that regularly gives both beginners and experienced Alpha Strike players pause: the mirrored setup.
You’ve come up with a clever strategy, carefully positioned your pawns—and your opponent on the other side of the table is doing exactly the same thing. Annoying, isn’t it?
In this article, you’ll learn how to break this symmetry and turn the tables in your favor.
What does “mirroring” actually mean?
When mirroring, the opposing player copies your unit placements almost exactly during the deployment phase. If you place a heavy mech on your left flank, he’ll place a heavy mech on his right flank (which is directly opposite yours). If you place fast scouts in the center behind a forest, he’ll do the same.
Your opponent’s goal is usually psychological in nature or simply a matter of caution: He wants to prevent you from creating a local advantage through your setup. He forces a seemingly “fair” one-on-one situation across the entire board. But we don’t want fair fights—we want to win.
Three Tactics for Breaking the Reflection
When I encounter this kind of behavior, I usually use one of the following three strategies to thwart my opponent’s plans.
1. The Bait Formation (The Denied Cross)
Alpha Strike is deployed on a rotating basis. You can take full advantage of that.
- The tactic: Start the deployment phase by placing your most mobile units (e.g., light mechs with high TMM or fast hovercrafts) on one flank. Your opponent will most likely follow suit and position their units opposite yours.
- The key: As soon as it’s your heavy units’ or your main extraction’s turn, place them all together on the completely opposite flank. Thanks to their high speed, your light units can immediately cross to the other side of the table in rounds 1 and 2 and join up with your main force. Hopefully, your opponent now has slower units isolated on the wrong side of the field.
2. Data Card Asymmetry (Values Take Precedence Over Position)
Just because the positions are mirrored doesn’t mean the mechs are. An Atlas is not an Awesome.
- The tactic: Analyze the stats (range bands and damage) of the Mechs directly facing you.
- Here’s the key: If you’re facing an enemy mech with high long-range damage (L) on the flank, but your mech positioned there is a melee monster (S), don’t back down. Use the terrain to block the line of sight, advance aggressively, and force it into close combat. The mirrored position is meaningless if you dictate the range matchup.
3. The Focused First Strike (Local Overload)
This tactic works right from the start of the first phase of movement, especially if you gain the initiative.
- The tactic: Let your opponent move their mirrored mechs forward first. Mirrored formations often move in a very straight line.
- The key: Instead of moving your Mechs straight ahead, pivot your entire formation toward a single enemy flank. Completely ignore the other side of the battlefield. Through this “Local Overload,” you concentrate all your firepower on one or two of the enemy’s mechs, while their other flank runs uselessly into thin air for one round.

Here’s a quick overview of which tactics are best for you:

My personal tip: Don’t panic if your opponent just copies your moves. Most of the time, it just shows that they don’t have a plan of their own and have to react to your actions. Whoever takes the initiative dictates the game. Whoever just copies moves is only playing catch-up!
