Map Editor and Map Room for Tactical Screen

New Feature for The Tactical Screen: The Map Editor and Map Room Are Here!

Anyone who’s been following this blog for a while knows how important the right terrain distribution and precise lines of sight on the hex grid and battlefield are to me. Whether we’re talking about intense Mech duels in classic BattleTech or fast-paced lance battles in BattleTech Alpha Strike, the battlefield often determines victory or defeat even before the first die is rolled.

To make planning, analyzing, and sharing playing field layouts even easier, I’ve created The Tactical Screen with two powerful new tools: the Map Editor and the new Map Room!

Here’s an overview of what the new features can do and how you can use them in your next battles.

1. The Map Editor: Plan Playing Fields & Run Through Tactics

The Map Editor is the centerpiece of the new update. It provides you with a digital drawing board that lets you build game boards exactly to your liking and with the terrain levels you want.

What can you do with the editor?

  • Set Terrain & Elevation Levels: Place buildings, hills, forests, and obstacles precisely and assign elevation levels to them.
  • Testing Lines of Sight (LoS): Before the match, test which terrain pieces block observers’ view and where blind spots might form for sniper mechs or ambushes.
  • Prepare scenario setups: Mark deployment zones, mission objectives, and danger zones directly on the map.

No more paper clutter when preparing for tournaments or designing your own campaign scenarios—you can simply set up the game board digitally.

2. The Map Room: Community Gallery & Discussion Forum

What good is the most ingenious map layout if it’s just sitting on your own screen? That’s exactly why I built the Map Gallery (found under ” Map Gallery ” in the English interface).

You can find the Map Room in the main menu, directly under the Map Editor (Karten-Editor > Kartenraum). It serves as a central hub for the entire community.

Highlights of the map room:

  • Open to Everyone: Any visitor—whether registered or not—can browse the card room. If you’re looking for inspiration for your next game weekend, just click through the gallery!
  • Publish Directly from the Editor: Once you’ve finished a map in the editor, simply click the “Publish to the Map Room” button . Enter a brief description (e.g., which rule set the map is intended for, which tonnage classes are particularly well-suited to it, or what tactical features it has) and upload it.
  • Comments & Feedback Loops: Registered users can leave comments on any post in the map room and reply directly to other commanders’ comments. Do you have a question about a deployment zone? Want to share tips on how to make the map even more balanced? Just start a discussion right below the map!

In a nutshell: Here’s how to get started

I’ve put a lot of hard work and passion into this update to make The Tactical Screen, step by step, the ultimate go-to resource for BattleTech tacticians.

Click through, create your first layouts, and upload them to the map room! I’m really looking forward to seeing your creations, your scenario ideas, and your feedback in the comments.

See you in the map room—and on the battlefield!
