From Classic to Alpha Strike: The Easiest Switch of Your MechWarrior Life!

From Classic to Alpha Strike: The Easiest Switch of Your MechWarrior Life!

If you’re reading this article, you’re most likely one of those people who love the unmistakable sound of shredding autocannons and the glow of ER lasers. You love BattleTech Classic. You love the depth of detail, managing heat scales, meticulously checking off armor points, and the thrill of a critical hit that blows up your opponent’s ammunition.

I totally get that. But let’s be honest: How often have you found yourself longing for epic mass battles involving several lances or even an entire company—only to realize that you’d have to take a whole weekend off to do it?

This is exactly where BattleTech Alpha Strike comes in. And the best part? The transition—or rather, the detour—couldn’t be easier for you as a Classic veteran. You basically don’t have to buy anything new. Here’s your roadmap explaining why the switch is a breeze.

1. Your mechs? They’ll stay exactly the same!

Forget about expensive system changes that require you to buy and paint an entirely new army. One of the biggest advantages for us Classic players: Your miniature collection is 100% compatible.

Whether you want to use the old tin Atlas from the ’90s, the sleek new plastic Mechs from the Catalyst boxes, or your painstakingly modified favorite Mechs—they’ll all find a new home on the Alpha Strike battlefield right away. A lance is still a lance, and a Clan star is still a star.

2. Data cards? Completely free at MUL

Whereas in Classic you have to pore over thick record sheets, in Alpha Strike a Mech’s entire profile fits on a handy playing-card-sized card. And no, you don’t have to buy any expensive card decks.

The official Master Unit List (MUL) from Catalyst Game Labs (masterunitlist.info) is your new best friend.

  • Just go to the website.
  • Search for your favorite mech (including almost every variant that has ever existed).
  • Click on the Alpha Strike map and print it out.

This map shows you everything: movement, damage at close, medium, and long range, as well as your structure and armor points. Instead of spending half an hour poring over tables, all it takes is a single glance.

3. A pro tip to get you started: Ignore the special rules (Specials)!

Once you’ve printed out your first data card, you’ll notice a line at the bottom right labeled “Specials. It will contain cryptic abbreviations like AECM, FLK, or MEL. My strong advice for your first few laps: Just ignore them completely for now!

You don’t have to worry about the countless special abilities of the units at all in the beginning. Alpha Strike has tremendous depth, but all these advanced special abilities are explained fully and in detail only in the comprehensive rulebook (the Commander’s Edition) anyway. If you try to wade through dozens of abbreviations right from the start, you’ll just disrupt your own flow in the game.

To get off to the perfect start, all you need is a handful of basic skills that you’ll understand right away:

  • IF (Indirect Fire): Allows the unit to provide indirect LRM fire as usual when a spotter can see the target.
  • CASE (Cellular Ammunition Storage Equipment): Protects your mech from being instantly destroyed by an ammunition explosion when hit by a critical strike—just like in Classic!
  • TUR (Turret): Indicates that the damage is fired from a rotating turret (most commonly on tanks) and is therefore independent of the vehicle’s orientation.
  • ENE (Energy): Indicates that the unit is equipped exclusively with energy weapons. For you, this means: No ammunition explosions are possible!
  • MEL (Melee): Indicates that the mech is equipped with melee weapons such as axes or swords and deals additional damage in physical attacks.

Just ignore everything else the first time around. You’ll see how wonderfully smooth the game feels as a result.

4. Do you love hex grids? No problem!

The biggest myth surrounding Alpha Strike is that you absolutely need a measuring tape and have to play on a blank board with tabletop terrain. Yes, Alpha Strike was designed for that classic “tabletop feel” with an inch tape measure. But you can just as easily play it on your favorite hex maps!

The rulebook natively supports gameplay on hex grids. The conversion is incredibly simple: 2 inches of range or movement basically equals 1 hex. So you can lay out your existing map sheets or the thick map sheet packs, place your Mechs on them, and get started right away. This saves space and feels familiar right away.

5. The Quick Start Rules won’t cost you a cent

Don’t want to buy the big Alpha Strike Commander’s Edition book right away? You don’t have to. Catalyst Game Labs offers the Alpha Strike Quick-Start Rules as a free download.

This concise PDF contains everything you need to understand the basic mechanics. The movement, the simplified shooting phase (a single damage value instead of hit zone tables), and the combat system are explained so clearly that you’ll be ready to go after just ten minutes of reading.

My Conclusion: Why You Should Give It a Try

Alpha Strike doesn’t take anything away from Classic players. It’s not a replacement, but a complement. While Classic celebrates intimate, meticulously detailed duels on a tactical level, Alpha Strike puts you in the general’s chair.

Here, you can effortlessly command 12-on-12 mechs (or more!) in under three hours. The gameplay is fast-paced, deadly, and incredibly cinematic—without losing that classic BattleTech feel.

Since the entire “starter pack” (you already have your Mechs, the rules are free, and the maps are online) costs you exactly 0 euros, there’s really no excuse left. Print out a few cards, memorize the four basic special abilities, grab your Classic Box, and give Alpha Strike a try. You’ll be surprised at how quickly and easily you can lead an entire company into battle!

See you on the battlefield—no matter which system!
