The children of Kerensky

Clan Culture Handbook: The Children of Kerensky

What the barbarians (people of the Inner Sphere) across the border misunderstand as “inhuman” is in truth the alchemy of the spirit – the extraction of the precious from the dross of treachery. The clans have shed the weakness of ancient humanity to shine in the darkness. This treatise will make you understand the “Way of the Clans”.

1 The origin: From exodus to new birth

The history of the Clans is no mere timeline; it is the sacred narrative of a necessary evolution. When the Star League broke apart due to the greed of the House Lords, General Aleksandr Kerensky realized that the survival of civilization was only possible through a total rejection of the corrupt Inner Sphere.

  • The Exodus (2784): Aleksandr Kerensky led 80% of the Star League Defense Force (SLDF) into the depths of space. He stripped the Houses of their sharpest sword to save the spirit of the League in exile.
  • The Second Exodus (June 8, 2802): After the death of Aleksandr (June 11, 2801) and the outbreak of civil wars in the Pentagon Worlds, Nicholas Kerensky led the most loyal to Strana Mechty. This was the birth of a new order that transcends cultural prejudices.
  • Operation KLONDIKE (2821): The Reconquest of the Pentagon Worlds. Here Nicholas Kerensky’s design proved its absolute superiority for the first time, as the twenty clans smashed the barbarism as perfectly coordinated units.

History is the foundation stone on which the flawless architecture of the clan order rests.

2. the caste system: a place for everyone, everyone in their place

There is no waste of talent in clan society. The clans use a strict caste system to ensure that each individual fulfills their genetic destiny for the good of the whole.

CasteMain taskSocial significance for the clan
WarriorDefense, conquest and leadershipThe absolute elite; they embody the will of the clan and represent the khans.
ScientistsResearch, genetics and technologyThe guardians of the eugenic program; they shape the future of our blood.
RetailerLogistics and resource managementSecure the economic basis. Special feature: In Clan Diamond Shark, they are the de facto rulers.
TechnicianMaintenance and servicingThe backbone of the war machine; they keep the mechs’ wrath alive.
WorkersProduction and raw material extractionThe fundamental basis; without their diligence there would be no survival in exile.

Note on social mobility: While Diamond Shark is the only clan that allows warriors to voluntarily switch to a lower caste, failure in the warrior caste leads to the obligatory “test-down” in all other clans. However, those who reject the order altogether find themselves in the Dark Caste – outcast, nameless and huntable.

But caste is only the framework; the true core of clan strength lies in the controlled evolution of the warrior caste.

3. the forge of warriors: Sibkos and the eugenic program

The clans know that true excellence cannot be left to chance. They have freed the act of procreation from emotional ties. The concept of “family” is an outdated illusion of the Spheroids (inhabitants of the Inner Sphere); the Clans have replaced it with the Sibko.

The life cycle of a clan warrior:

  1. Genetic selection: The science caste combines DNA samples from the most successful warriors in history.
  2. Iron womb: The embryos mature in artificial tanks, protected from biological imponderables.
  3. Sibko indoctrination: Children from the same gene pool grow up together. Competition is brutal; camaraderie is defined by the need to win.
  4. Phenotype specialization (since 2858): Breeding is differentiated into three main types: the agile MechWarrior, the massive Elemental and the responsive Pilot.
  5. Trial of Position: The final test. Those who pass become warriors. Those who fail serve the clan in a lower caste.

However, genetic perfection is only the raw material; only the blood name gives a warrior true immortality.

4. blood names: Immortality through inheritance

A Bloodname is the only legitimate surname of the warrior caste. It is an exclusive privilege that goes right back to the original 800 founding fathers of the clans.

“The Blood Chapels on Strana Mechty are the most sacred sanctuary of the Caln people. This is where the genetic essence of the ancestors is stored. Anyone who bears a blood name is no longer just an individual; they are a link in a chain of immortality that stretches back to Nicholas Kerensky.”

There are never more than 25 living carriers of a blood name at any one time. Inheritance is exclusively matrilineal via the mitochondrial lines. If a bearer dies, their inheritance is fought out anew in a ritual Trial of Bloodright. However, a name without discipline is like a weapon without polish; honor only comes from strict adherence to the clan code.

5 The Code: Honor, language and efficiency

The actions of the clans are guided by a cool logic that they have elevated to the status of law. The barren worlds of the Kerensky Cluster, which are barely breathable and lacking in resources, do not tolerate excess.

  • “Waste Not, Want Not”: in society, waste is a crime against survival. This ritualized efficiency extends to recycling the organs of deceased warriors.
  • Zellbrigen: These dueling rules prevent the senseless destruction of resources. Clans wage war as a precise instrument, not as chaotic carnage. A batchall (bidding process) minimizes the troops deployed to the absolute minimum.
  • Linguistic purity: Clans reject contractions (such as “don’t” instead of “do not”). If you can’t control your language, you can’t control your thinking. Precision in language reflects precision in combat.

This code is not a secular law, but the will of the clan founding fathers, which distinguishes the clans.

6 The cult of Kerensky: myth and messianism

The spiritual power of the clans is fed by the veneration of the ancestors. While classical religions are seen as a distraction, the “cult of Kerensky” is the foundation of the clan’s identity.

Central dogmas of clan spirituality:

  • Aleksandr Kerensky as a father figure: the liberator who led the clans out of the darkness of the Inner Sphere.
  • Nicholas Kerensky as Messiah: the creator of the clans, who gave the clans a new soul.
  • Hidden Hope Doctrine: The truth that the Clans will one day return to save the Inner Sphere and reshape the Star League.

Mystical currents such as “The Way” (Clan Cloud Cobra) or the Nova Cats’ Vision Quests complement this core. Clan Goliath Scorpion in particular uses the hallucinogen Necrosia to receive visions of past Star League glory – a tool to manifest the legacy of the Elders in the present.

7. wardens vs. crusaders: the philosophical acid test

Despite our unity, there is a deep division over the interpretation of our return. This philosophical debate determines the fate of the clans.

IdeologyObjectiveMotivationProminent clans
Warden (Guardian)Protection of the Inner SphereThe clans are the distant protectors who only intervene when the Star League organically emerges.Clan Wolf (former), Clan Coyote
Crusader (Crusader)Conquering the Inner SphereThe clans must free the barbarians by force and lead them under the banner of a new Star League.Clan Jade Falcon, Clan Smoke Jaguar

This conflict is not mere politics. It is the battle for the soul of the clan way.

8 Glossary of identity: Understanding the clan spirit

To exist as part of the clan order, you must speak the language of the clans:

  • Batchall: The ritual challenge in which battle objectives and troop strengths are negotiated in advance.
  • Bondsman: A defeated enemy bound by a bond of honor. He is not a slave, but an aspirant who must earn his place in the clan anew.
  • Freebirth: A derogatory term for people who were created by natural birth and not by the eugenic process.
  • Isorla: The rightful spoils of battle – be it machines, territories or people.
  • Quiaff / Quineg: Rhetorical confirmations at the end of a sentence (“Not true? / No?”), which emphasize the longing for consensus and clarity.
  • Seyla: The sacred response in clan ceremonies. An expression of reverence and unity.
  • Solahma: Units of aged warriors who seek a final, useful death for the clan in battle.

The society of the clans is the result of conscious design, forged in the necessity of survival. Those who follow the “Way of the Clans” leave behind the shortcomings of old humanity to become part of an imperishable order. In a galaxy of chaos, they are the only logical answer. Seyla.
