Focus on the Locust: strategies and tactics for BattleTech Alpha Strike

The Locust is one of the most famous BattleMechs in the BattleTech universe. As a light scout, it has been known since the early days of the game for its speed, maneuverability and ability to move almost invisibly across the battlefield . But how do you get the most out of this agile mech in BattleTech Alpha Strike? In this article, we take a look at the strengths and weaknesses of the Locust and how to play it tactically.

The Locust at a glance

The Locust is a light mech of the 20-ton class that is characterized above all by its incredible speed. With a movement profile of 16 inches in BattleTech Alpha Strike, it is one of the fastest units in the game. However, its armament is minimal, often consisting of a combination of machine guns, lasers or autocannons in light calibers. This armament clearly shows that the Locust is not intended for direct combat – its strength lies in outmaneuvering and support.

Strengths

  • Extreme mobility: With a movement value of 16 inches and the ability to use the “sprint” options, the Locust can effortlessly attack flanks or outmaneuver cumbersome opponents.
  • Low cost factor: With low point costs (PV often between 12-20 points, depending on the variant), the Locust offers an excellent cost-benefit ratio.
  • Recon: Many scenarios in Alpha Strike reward recon players, be it by achieving certain objectives or uncovering units. The Locust is perfect for such missions.

Weaknesses

  • Thin armor: The Locust is one of the weakest armored mechs and can often be knocked out by a single hit.
  • Limited armament: With low damage values, it is hardly capable of dealing serious damage, except against infantry or other light units.

Tactics for using the Locust in Alpha Strike

  1. Reconnaissance and objective runner The Locust is predestined for missions that involve capturing control points, disrupting supply lines or uncovering enemy units. Its speed allows it to reach objectives before the enemy and escape again quickly. This makes it a valuable tool in scenarios with mission objectives.
    Example strategy:
    • In the first round, move the Locust close to an unoccupied control point. Use its speed to reach the target and at the same time get into hard-to-hit positions (e.g. behind cover or in difficult terrain).
    • As soon as the point is secured, withdraw it or use it to attack other mission objectives.
  2. Distraction and Disruption The Locust can be used as an excellent “distraction maneuver”. Enemies trying to catch the nimble mech often waste resources and movement phases while the rest of your forces can focus on more important targets.
Tip: Use the Locust to keep slow mechs with high firepower (e.g. Assault class) busy by always staying outside their optimal firing range.
  3. Flank attacks Despite its weak armament, the Locust can provide support with targeted flank attacks, especially against unprotected side armor or opponents who have already been hit.
    Example:
Use the Locust’s mobility to attack the flank of a Medium or Heavy mech that is tied up by other units. A single point of damage can be decisive in eliminating an opponent.
  4. Cooperation with other mechs The Locust is not a lone fighter. In combination with other light or mobile mechs (e.g. Jenner, Spider or Firestarter), it can act as part of a “wolf pack”. This tactic is particularly effective against isolated enemies or artillery units.

Proven variants of the Locust

  1. Locust LCT-1E
    • Equipped with several energy weapons, this variant is flexible and independent of ammunition. Perfect for longer missions.
  2. Locust LCT-1M
    • This variant has a rocket launcher, which gives it a greater range and versatile deployment options.
  3. Locust LCT-1V
    • The classic variant with machine guns. Ideal for fighting infantry and light vehicles.

The variants can be called up in the Master Unit List.

Conclusion

In BattleTech Alpha Strike, the Locust is a specialist that shines with speed and flexibility. Used correctly, it can thwart enemy plans, secure mission objectives and put the enemy under constant pressure. Despite its fragile nature, the Locust should not be underestimated – it is a perfect example of how speed and strategy are often more important than pure firepower.
