Strategy and tactics: Center of Gravity<\/h2>\n\n

The term “center of gravity<\/strong> ” originally comes from the military theory of the Prussian general Carl von Clausewitz<\/a> and is used to describe the strategically decisive element (“center of all power and movement”) of an opposing force or conflict. It is the point or area on which the enemy’s ability to achieve its objectives depends. <\/p>\n\n

\"Tactics<\/figure>\n\n

Meanings in modern military practice:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n

1. Operational:<\/strong> The central target whose neutralization decisively weakens the opponent.<\/p>\n\n

– Example: An important command and control point, supply lines or a specific elite unit.<\/p>\n\n

2. Strategic:<\/strong> factors that support the political or military will of an opponent.<\/p>\n\n

– Example: The support of the population, economic resources or diplomatic alliances.<\/p>\n\n

3. Psychological:<\/strong> the morale or determination of an opposing party.<\/p>\n\n

– Identifying and combating the “center of gravity” should turn the battle decisively in your favor by depriving the enemy of its ability to wage war effectively.<\/p>\n\n

In modern conflicts, however, it can be difficult to define a clear center of gravity, especially in asymmetric warfare or operations against non-state actors.<\/p>\n\n
