Meanwhile, on the icy high plateau outside the city, only a handful of vehicles stood between the pirates’ landing zones and the unprotected civilian areas.<\/p>\n\n
Vivienne fastened her seatbelts in the cockpit of her 90-metric-ton Cyclops CP-11-G<\/em>. Three markers lit up on the HUD in front of her: Captain Vance\u2019s Clint CLNT-5U<\/em>, a nimble Locust LCT-5W2<\/em>, and the heavy Crusader CRD-6M<\/em>. Before Vivienne could even align the target acquisition computer, a blinding blue-and-white flash streaked through the frosty air. The Marauder\u2019s ER-class laser gouged deep into the Clint\u2019s<\/em> left shoulder. Sparks flew, and the ceramic armor melted like wax. Vance\u2019s mech stumbled, regaining its balance with a wobble, but its armor gauge was already flashing dark red.<\/p>\n\n“I’m still here!” Vance shouted over the airwaves.<\/p>\n\n
The Lanze returned fire in a flash. LRMs from the Crusader and the heavy Gauss round from Vivienne\u2019s Cyclops<\/em> lashed out at the Marauder<\/em>, but the projectiles merely grazed its hardened hull.<\/p>\n\nBefore Vivienne could bellow another command, a triple burst of light ripped across the horizon. Three blinding salvos from particle cannons pierced the Crusader\u2019s<\/em> torso with pinpoint accuracy. The force of the impacts knocked the 66-metric-ton mech clean off its feet. It crashed backward into the icy ground, its legs stretched out motionless. No muzzle flash had been visible.<\/p>\n\n\u201cGideon! Come in!\u201d Vivienne shouted into the microphone. Nothing. From the hollow behind the Marauder, a low, tracked silhouette emerged: a Schrek PPC Carrier<\/em>. The warning lights in her damaged cockpit flashed relentlessly red. The Cyclops<\/em> swayed, and the reactor roared menacingly. Standing beside her were only Vance\u2019s battered Clint<\/em> and Gideon\u2019s smoking Crusader<\/em>, which could barely stay upright.<\/p>\n\nThe Hunchback<\/em>, the eight armored infantrymen, the Marauder<\/em>, and the Schrek tank<\/em> advanced in a wedge formation. <\/p>\n\n\u201cLance! On the other side, their tactics were paying off: a concentrated broadside from the Harlequins gnawed deep into the Marauder\u2019s<\/em> front armor, forcing the enemy pilot to briefly slow his advance.<\/p>\n\nBut true disaster was closing in inexorably.<\/p>\n\n
The Hunchback HBK-5H<\/em> \u2014a notorious, deadly close-quarters fighter\u2014used the cover of the smoking debris to creep menacingly close to the Harlequins\u2019 line. Its massive shoulder cannons rose, aimed at the heavily damaged, one-armed Crusader<\/em>. The Hunchback\u2019s pilot prepared to deliver the coup de gr\u00e2ce to Gideon at point-blank range.<\/p>\n\nVivienne wanted to throw her Cyclops<\/em> in between them, but her reactor howled under the thermal overload.
