In our <a href=\"https:\/\/mechstrategen.de\/en\/every-beginning-is-a-lance\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/mechstrategen.de\/?p=4899\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">last article<\/a>, we took an in-depth look at the perfect solo lineup and explored how you can get the most out of your games with just four &#8216;Mechs\u2014whether as a specialized team or an all-around lineup. If you haven\u2019t read that guide yet, be sure to check it out, because the roles discussed there form the foundation for everything that\u2019s coming up. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, we\u2019re doubling down! As the battlefield gets bigger and you increase the point total to a typical range of <strong>200 to 300 PV<\/strong>, a single lance is often no longer enough. Now comes the most exciting part of <em>BattleTech: Alpha Strike<\/em> for you: the interplay of different lance formations (also referred to as <em>\u201cformations\u201d<\/em> in the rulebook).  <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/mechstrategen.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/1747719602468-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1952\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mechstrategen.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/1747719602468-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/mechstrategen.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/1747719602468-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mechstrategen.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/1747719602468-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/mechstrategen.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/1747719602468-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/mechstrategen.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/1747719602468-2048x1536.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re fielding <strong>two lances<\/strong> in battle, you no longer have to force your units into a single, rigid framework. Instead, we assign each lance a higher-level strategic role. For an absolutely deadly yet easy-to-learn starting strategy, I recommend combining a sturdy <strong>Battle Lance<\/strong> (the anvil) with a lightning-fast <strong>Striker\/Cavalry Lance<\/strong> (the hammer).<a href=\"https:\/\/mechstrategen.de\/en\/tactics-focus-the-hammer-and-anvil-strategy-in-battletech-alpha-strike\/\" type=\"post\" id=\"2921\"> I\u2019ll explain the details of this strategy in this post<\/a>.   <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lance 1: The Battle Lance (\u201cThe Unyielding Anvil\u201d)<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Strategic Role:<\/strong> This battle lance forms the solid core of your army. Its mission is to advance, secure mission objectives in the center of the table, absorb the enemy\u2019s heaviest fire, and in turn inflict maximum damage. A Battle Lance traditionally consists of heavy, well-armored units.  <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Lineup (Example \u2013 142 PV)<\/h3>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Marauder MAD-3R<\/strong> (Sniper \u2013 35 HP)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Thunderbolt TDR-5S<\/strong> (Brawler \u2013 36 HP)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Warhammer WHM-6R<\/strong> (Brawler \u2013 32 HP)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Awesome AWS-8Q<\/strong> (Sniper \u2013 39 HP)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why this compilation?<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For beginners, this lineup is a dream in terms of reliability. All four &#8216;Mechs have a movement rate of <strong>6&#8243; or 8&#8243;<\/strong>, which means they can move forward perfectly in unison as a tight phalanx. They all share the profile of heavy brawlers or snipers.  <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The synergy effect:<\/strong> When playing under the expanded campaign rules, an official <em>Battle Lance<\/em> often grants its members bonus abilities such as <em>&#8220;Lucky<\/em> &#8221; (which allows them to reroll failed hit rolls). This makes these already accurate &#8216;Mechs even more ruthless. They march straight toward the enemy and force them to engage.  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lance 2: The Striker\/Cavalry Lance (\u201cThe Deadly Hammer\u201d)<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The strategic role:<\/strong> While the Battle Lance ties down the enemy\u2019s attention, the Striker\/Cavalry Lance strikes where it hurts most. Its tasks include flanking attacks, hunting down enemy support Mechs (Snipers), and quickly capturing distant mission objectives. It consists of fast, mobile units that can deal heavy damage as they pass by.  <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Lineup (Example \u2013 106 PV)<\/h3>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Phoenix Hawk PXH-1<\/strong> (Skirmisher \u2013 26 HP)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Griffin GRF-1N<\/strong> (Sniper \u2013 31 HP)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Wolverine WVR-6R<\/strong> (Skirmisher \u2013 30 HP)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Locust LCT-1E<\/strong> (Scout \u2013 19 PV)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why this compilation?<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This Lancer relies entirely on the <strong>Speed<\/strong> attribute. The slowest &#8216;Mech here <strong>moves 10&#8243;<\/strong>, while the <em>Phoenix Hawk<\/em> and the <em>Griffin<\/em> also have jump jets (<code>j<\/code>) that allow them to easily leap over hills and buildings. <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>High TMM (Target Movement Modifier):<\/strong> Beginners often underestimate how important movement is as a form of armor. Due to their high speeds, these &#8216;Mechs almost always generate a modifier of <strong>+2 to +3<\/strong> when they move. This means it&#8217;s incredibly difficult for the opponent to hit them.  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Striker Advantage:<\/strong> Unlike purely defensive scout units, these variants (such as the <em>Locust-1E<\/em> with lasers instead of machine guns or the <em>Griffin<\/em> with its KSR\/LSR combination) have enough firepower to deliver the finishing blow to damaged enemy mechs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Teamwork: The Tactics for Two Lances<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you set up both spears, you have to think of them as two arms of the same body. They must not operate completely independently of each other, but must pass the ball back and forth to each other. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 1: Secure with the Battle Lance<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Place your Battle Lance in the center of your deployment zone. Have it advance directly toward the most important objective or the heaviest concentration of enemy &#8216;Mechs. The enemy will see the monstrous firepower of <em>Awesome<\/em> and <em>Marauder<\/em> and will instinctively deploy its own heavy units against them. Your Battle Lance will absorb this pressure thanks to its thick armor.   <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 2: Using the Striker Lance<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Keep your Strikers\/Cavalry Lance ready on one of the outer flanks. Use forests or hills to block the line of sight as you maneuver around the enemy army with a movement of 10&#8243; or more. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 3: The Coordinated Strike<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As soon as your opponent is locked in a clash with your Battle Lance, the Striker Lance bursts out from cover.<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <em>Locust<\/em> and the <em>Phoenix Hawk<\/em> sprint behind the enemy mechs to gain the <strong>rear-attack bonus (+1 damage)<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>At the same time, <em>Griffin<\/em> and <em>Wolverine<\/em> fire as they move.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The enemy faces a tactical dilemma: If he turns around to fight the fast Plagemisters at his back, he exposes his vulnerable rear to your heavy Battle Lance. If he ignores the Striker Lance, he\u2019ll be methodically shot to pieces from behind. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion for Beginners<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Controlling two lances takes Alpha Strike to a whole new strategic level without making the game any more complicated.
