We\u2019ve all been there: You\u2019ve neatly deployed your lances across the deployment zone, and suddenly you realize that your opponent is throwing almost all of his combat power onto a single flank. On the other flank, there are only a few token units or fast scouts. Congratulations\u2014you\u2019re looking at one of the oldest military tricks in world history: the asymmetrical battle formation<\/strong><\/a>. <\/p>\n\n

Today I’ll show you how to recognize this classic approach in BattleTech Alpha Strike and\u2014more importantly\u2014how to respond to it effectively as the defender.<\/p>\n\n

What exactly is the “asymmetrical battle formation”?<\/h2>\n\n

The tactic was originally devised by the Greek general Epaminondas and was later perfected by Frederick the Great. The principle is basically simple, but highly effective: <\/p>\n\n

The attacker concentrates his absolute elite units and heavy brawlers (melee fighters) on a single flank to establish massive, localized superiority there. The other flank is deliberately “denied”\u2014that is, kept lightly manned and held back defensively. <\/p>\n\n

The goal of all this is to completely overrun your flank there, while your units on the other side of the battlefield initially run into thin air. In Alpha Strike, this often means: A massive wave of death consisting of heavy (Assault) Mechs crashes down on the spearheads of your flank, while the rest of your army is too far away to intervene directly and help. After the attacker has crushed one of your flanks, they turn their units toward the center and pin you down there. <\/p>\n\n

Three Tactics for Responding Effectively<\/h2>\n\n

If you realize your opponent is playing this game with you, you mustn’t just stand there and do nothing. You have to disrupt the attacker’s plan. Here are three tried-and-true ways I respond to this in my games: <\/p>\n\n

1. Exchanging Space for Time (The Mirrored Evasion)<\/h3>\n\n

This is the most defensive\u2014but often the safest\u2014option. If the enemy’s death roll is bearing down on your right flank, pull those units back immediately. <\/p>\n\n
