It satisfies the inner MechWarrior and draws admiring glances around the gaming table. But who hasn\u2019t been there? By the end of the game, there are hardly any enemy Mechs left, but your opponent is grinning, pointing at the scoreboard, and has won on points.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In BattleTech Alpha Strike, many players\u2014whether newcomers or veterans\u2014fall into the \u201cannihilation trap.\u201d In this article, we\u2019ll explore why a strategist\u2019s cool head almost always triumphs over a warrior\u2019s pride. <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"623\" src=\"https:\/\/mechstrategen.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/map_dorf-1-1024x623.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3829\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mechstrategen.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/map_dorf-1-1024x623.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/mechstrategen.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/map_dorf-1-300x182.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mechstrategen.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/map_dorf-1-768x467.jpg 768w, https:\/\/mechstrategen.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/map_dorf-1-1536x934.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/mechstrategen.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/map_dorf-1-2048x1245.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Warrior&#8217;s Pride vs. the Strategist&#8217;s Logic<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We all love destruction. That\u2019s why we push massive, multi-ton combat behemoths across the battlefield. In the community, people often talk about <strong>\u201ctabling\u201d<\/strong> \u2014the total annihilation of the opponent. It\u2019s the ultimate goal in a deathmatch, but in a scenario game, it\u2019s often a risky distraction.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Objective scoring<\/strong>, or <strong>objective play<\/strong>, on the other hand, means that victory is defined by victory points (VP), which are earned by holding zones, reaching the edges of the playing field, or securing terrain areas. Players who focus solely on destruction often waste valuable activations on targets that are irrelevant to the final outcome. A strategic victory may feel less \u201cbrutal,\u201d but it is usually the result of significantly superior planning.  <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Math Behind Victory Points<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To succeed in Alpha Strike, you have to understand the scenarios. Take classics like <em>King of the Hill<\/em> or <em>Capture the Flag<\/em>, for example. In these scenarios, it\u2019s often not how much damage you deal that counts, but who is standing in a specific zone at the end of the round.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let\u2019s look at a calculation example: A heavy mech with a point value (PV) of 50 that holds a target zone for three rounds and generates 5 victory points per round has earned 15 VP. Meanwhile, a 100-PV assault mech that chases a fast scout mech across the entire map might earn 10 VP through destruction\u2014but has itself tied up a lot of resources (PV) that would have been better used elsewhere. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A 100-point Mech that stoically holds a mission objective is often more valuable than the same Mech in a wild chase. It forces the opponent to come to it and fight on the defender&#8217;s terms. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Scapegoats and Distractions: Screening Tactics<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the most important tactical lessons is the use of \u201cobstructions.\u201d Sometimes a unit doesn\u2019t have to survive to fulfill its purpose. <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Screening:<\/strong> This involves physically placing units (often cheap vehicles or infantry) in the enemy\u2019s path. In Alpha Strike, units cannot simply move through enemy models. A squad of cheap infantry can hold up an 80-metric-ton vehicle for an entire round simply by blocking its path to the mission objective.  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cheap Point-Fillers:<\/strong> Units like the <em>Savannah Master<\/em> or basic tanks are perfect for occupying distant targets. They cost almost no VP, and if the opponent wastes firepower on them, your heavy mechs will remain unscathed. Every volley fired at a 5-point tank is a volley that your valuable units don\u2019t have to take.  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mobility as the Key to Victory<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Armor wins battles, but mobility wins wars. In missions (and Objective Play<strong>)<\/strong> with objectives, <strong>jump jets<\/strong> are worth their weight in gold. They allow you to ignore rough terrain and jump into an objective zone during the final phase of a round.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A key concept here is <strong>\u201ccontesting<\/strong> \u201d: To prevent your opponent from scoring points for a target, you don\u2019t necessarily have to destroy it. It\u2019s often enough simply to move one of your own units near the target. A fast mech that uses a high TMM (Target Movement Modifier) to reach the zone denies the opponent points, even if it doesn\u2019t fire at all that round.  <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Target Priority Under Time Pressure<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The hardest decision is often choosing a target. Who should die? In a tactical game, the answer is almost never \u201cthe strongest mech.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/mechstrategen.de\/en\/target-prioritization\/\" type=\"post\" id=\"1991\">The priority<\/a> should always be the unit that can generate points <strong>now or on the next turn<\/strong>.  <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Example:<\/strong> A damaged light mech is about to capture a flag. An undamaged <em>Warhammer<\/em> is standing right next to it. Instinct says, \u201cShoot the Warhammer\u2014it\u2019s dangerous!\u201d The strategist\u2019s logic says, \u201cTake out the light mech, or you\u2019ll lose the game on points.\u201d   <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ignore \u201cdecoy mechs\u201d:<\/strong> A slow Assault Mech standing far away from the action is often an \u201canchor\u201d meant to tie you down. If it can\u2019t directly affect the mission objective, ignore it. It may be dangerous, but if it doesn\u2019t earn you any points, it\u2019s irrelevant to the final result.  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion: A dispassionate look at the scoreboard<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Strategy in Alpha Strike means resisting the urge to go for the next kill. My most important tip for your next game night: Check the scoreboard after every movement phase. Don\u2019t ask yourself, \u201cHow much damage can I deal?\u201d but rather, \u201cHow many points am I scoring this round, and how many am I preventing my opponent from scoring?\u201d  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Play the mission, not the enemy. If, in the end, all that\u2019s left on the battlefield is a smoking wreck of your smallest tank, but it\u2019s holding the decisive point\u2014then you\u2019ve won.
