The BattleTech universe is essentially dominated by two completely different cultures. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Inner Sphere (Inner Sphere)<\/h3>\n\n<p>The Inner Sphere is the heartland of humanity, divided among powerful interstellar noble houses (such as House Davion, House Steiner or House Kurita). They have been waging fierce wars of succession for centuries. <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The Mechs:<\/strong> Their technology is often old, robust and pragmatic. Individual fates and the despair of constant war characterize this faction. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The organization:<\/strong> They traditionally fight in groups of four, the so-called <strong>lances<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The feeling:<\/strong> If you like the charm of gritty sci-fi, political intrigue and tanks on two legs, you&#8217;ve come to the right place.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The clans<\/h3>\n\n<p>The Clans are the descendants of an elite army that fled long ago and developed a strictly caste-based, genetically optimized warrior culture in exile. They returned in the year 3050 to conquer the Inner Sphere. <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The mechs:<\/strong> Technologically, the clans of the Inner Sphere are vastly superior. Their so-called <em>OmniMechs<\/em> are modular, faster and fire harder. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The organization:<\/strong> The clans abhor waste and fight in groups of five, the so-called <strong>Stars<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The feeling:<\/strong> If you prefer sophisticated high-tech war machines, proud warrior ethics and uncompromising firepower, the Clans are your choice.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Time travel and budget: The game agreement (era &amp; PV)<\/h2>\n\n<p>Unlike many other tabletops, BattleTech has a gigantic, continuous timeline that spans centuries. This timeline is divided into different eras &#8211; the so-called <a href=\"https:\/\/mechstrategen.de\/en\/eras-in-battletech\/\" type=\"post\" id=\"416\"><strong>eras<\/strong> (such as the <em>Succession Wars<\/em>, <em>Clan Invasion<\/em> or <em>IlClan era<\/em>)<\/a>.<br\/>To ensure that a match is fair and that both sides meet with equally strong forces, you and your opponent agree on two central cornerstones before the game: <\/p>\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The era (the technological framework):<\/strong> The eras determine which technology and which mech variants exist on the playing field. A mech that was still a rare classic in the year 3025<em>(Succession Wars<\/em>) may have been given a state-of-the-art variant with completely new weapon systems in the year 3150<em>(ilClan<\/em>). So you choose variants that exist in your era &#8211; and if you want, you can also match them historically to your faction.  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The point value \/ PV (army size):<\/strong> Each unit in Alpha Strike has a fixed point <strong>value<\/strong>, the <strong>PV (Point Value)<\/strong>. A small, light scout costs little PV, whereas a heavily armed flagship mech weighing tons costs a lot. You agree a fixed PV limit for the game (e.g. 200 or 300 PV). This limit defines the maximum size of your army &#8211; whoever builds their list may not exceed this value. This guarantees that your troops are absolutely balanced.<br\/>Don&#8217;t worry, it sounds like a lot of arithmetic, but thanks to modern tools it can be done in seconds.    <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Way 1: The royal road &#8211; The Alpha Strike starter box<\/h2>\n\n<p>If you are looking for an all-round carefree package, there is absolutely no way around the <strong>official Alpha Strike starter box<\/strong>. It is the foundation for every new player. <br\/><strong>What&#8217;s inside?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>13 high-quality plastic miniatures:<\/strong> You get a colorful mix of robust <strong>Inner Sphere<\/strong> mechs and the technologically advanced mechs of the <strong>clans<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Terrain:<\/strong> Cardboard buildings and trees so that your playing field doesn&#8217;t look like a desert.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The rulebook:<\/strong> An easy-to-understand book that guides you step by step.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Game material:<\/strong> dice, cardboard stand-up display and, above all, the important unit cards (Alpha Strike Cards).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Route 2: Individual entry (without starter box)<\/h2>\n\n<p>Perhaps you don&#8217;t like the contents of the box, or you would like to invest more specifically in a particular group. That&#8217;s no problem at all! You only need three things: <strong>figures, rules and dice<\/strong>.  <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. the miniatures: choose your force pack<\/h3>\n\n<p>BattleTech is available in so-called <em><a href=\"https:\/\/mechstrategen.de\/en\/category\/battletech-forcepacks\/\" type=\"category\" id=\"131\">Force Packs<\/a><\/em> sold. If you start without the big box, I recommend you start with exactly <strong>one<\/strong> Force Pack. But which one?  <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>For fans of the Inner<\/strong> <strong>Sphere<\/strong> <strong>:<\/strong> grab the <strong>Inner Sphere Command L<\/strong> ance. It contains four iconic, versatile mechs (including the legendary <em>Marauder<\/em> and <em>Archer<\/em>). <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>For fans of the clans:<\/strong> Grab the <strong>Clan Command Star<\/strong>. The clans fight in groups of five. With mechs like the <em>Timber Wolf<\/em> (Mad Cat) or <em>Dire Wolf<\/em> (Daishi), you have the cr\u00e8me de la cr\u00e8me of clan technology on the table.  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Why exactly these boxes for the start?<\/strong>  A commando formation is the absolute all-rounder for beginners. This is due to its structure: such a box usually <strong>contains something from all weight classes<\/strong> &#8211; from the agile, light or medium-heavy mech for the flanks to the heavy, thick assault mech that takes the hits at the front. This allows you to immediately get to know the different roles and the interaction of the various mech types in the game!  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is one box not enough to get you started? Time for reinforcements! <\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to go a little bigger straight away or expand directly after the first match, your squad can be perfectly supplemented with a second Force Pack:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The Battle Formation (e.g. Inner Sphere Battle Lance \/ Clan Battle Star):<\/strong> These packs provide you with solid, battle-ready line mechs (such as the unstoppable <em>Warhammer<\/em> or <em>Atlas<\/em> in the Inner Sphere). They are the perfect addition to give your commando force a solid, powerful foundation for a direct exchange of blows. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Cavalry or Striker packs (e.g. Inner Sphere Striker Lance \/ Clan Cavalry Star):<\/strong> If you prefer a tactical approach, you&#8217;ve come to the right place. These boxes contain fast, mobile mechs. They are ideal for giving your force the speed it needs to flank the enemy, capture mission objectives or hunt down battered foes.  <br\/><strong>Big plus point:<\/strong> Each of these Force Packs comes with the matching printed Alpha Strike data cards for the included mechs right in the packaging! So you can unpack them straight away and put them on the gaming table. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. the rules: Free of charge as PDF<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You don&#8217;t have to buy an expensive rulebook to get started. Catalyst Game Labs offers the <strong>Alpha Strike Quick-Start Rules<\/strong> completely free of charge as a PDF download. Just type it into your favorite search engine. These rules contain everything you need for the first few rounds, including simplified data cards to print out.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The most important tool: The Master Unit List (MUL)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Even though the boxes and force packs already come with cards, there is one website that will be your best friend from day 1: the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mechstrategen.de\/en\/first-steps-with-the-master-unit-list-mul\/\" type=\"post\" id=\"4397\">Master Unit List<\/a><\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/masterunitlist.info\" type=\"link\" id=\"masterunitlist.info\">(masterunitlist.info<\/a>). This is the official, gigantic database of all BattleTech units.<br\/>The brilliant thing for you as a beginner: <strong>you never have to spend money to get new or different variants of your mechs<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Free Alpha Strike cards:<\/strong> Each mech exists in the Lore in different versions (e.g. with different weapons). On the MUL you can search for every single mech in the game and download and print out the corresponding Alpha Strike card as a PDF for free. This way you can try out the mechs from your Force Pack in completely new variations over time!  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Filter by era and faction:<\/strong> In the Force Builder of the MUL, you can click on the exact era and faction you want in advance. The database then automatically filters out all mechs that do not fit. You can immediately see at a glance which exact variants of your mech are legal for your agreed game.  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Very easy force building:<\/strong> You simply click on your mechs in the filtered list. The website shows you the current PV value for each mech and automatically adds everything up in the background. This allows you to keep a perfect eye on the agreed points limit. At the end, you can print out your finished army list as a compact PDF, including all the ready-to-play mech cards. It couldn&#8217;t be quicker or easier!    <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Show your colors: How do I paint my mechs?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Are your mechs in front of you but still gray? Let&#8217;s change that now. The beauty of BattleTech is that <strong>there is no &#8220;what-you-see-is-what-you-get&#8221; constraint<\/strong>. You can paint your mechs however you like and still play them as any faction you want.<br\/>However, if you want to follow the official, extremely cool Lore color schemes, there&#8217;s a must-visit address on the net: <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mechstrategen.de\/en\/camospecs-online\/\" type=\"page\" id=\"3769\">Camospecs Online<\/a><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/camospecs.com\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/camospecs.com\/\">(camospecs.com<\/a>). There you will find thousands of professionally painted miniatures of all factions as a perfect template.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The ultimate tip for those who are undecided about getting started:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You don&#8217;t know yet whether you&#8217;d rather play the Inner Sphere or the Clans? Or you just can&#8217;t decide on a big house? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Choose a mercenary unit (Mercenaries):<\/strong> Units like the <em>Eridani Light Horse<\/em>, <em>Kell Hounds<\/em> or <em>Wolf&#8217;s Dragoons<\/em> fight for whoever pays the best. They often use mechs from all eras and worlds. This gives you maximum freedom when setting up your troops.  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Create your own mercenary troop:<\/strong> Think of a cool name and give your mechs your very own favorite color scheme. Individuality is extremely important in the BattleTech community! <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Your timetable for week 1:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Decide:<\/strong> Starter box OR a Command Force Pack (and possibly a matching supplement pack) + free PDF rules.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Agree on the game framework:<\/strong> Agree on an era (e.g. Clan Invasion) and a maximum PV point value for your first match.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Discover optional variants:<\/strong> Take a look at the master unit list, use the filters and click on a list that is exactly within the PV limit.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Tinkering &amp; cleaning:<\/strong> The mechs are already built! Simply wash them briefly in lukewarm soapy water (dissolves release agent residue), prime, paint and get started. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>First test game:<\/strong> Grab a few dice, take the Quick Start rules and push the mechs across the kitchen table.
