The all-rounder lance <\/h2>\n\n<p>One of the most frequently asked questions I receive by email or in the comments on various platforms is the classic one for beginners: &#8220;I only want to start with a single lance &#8211; which mechs should I pack?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n<p>In the world of BattleTech Alpha Strike, the temptation to specialize in either massive firepower (Assaults) or extreme speed (Lights) is great. But if you only have one formation in the field, you need a tool that can cope with any situation. It is not just a narrative concept, but a tactical necessity for players who value flexibility over specialization. Instead of putting all your eggs in one basket, this formation combines different weight classes to form a synergistic whole.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Task: The dilemma of the single lance<\/h2>\n\n<p>If you play Alpha Strike with only four models (one lance), you face a problem: <strong>the unpredictability of your opponent<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you only choose heavy mechs, you will be surrounded by fast units and will simply be left behind when it comes to mission objectives.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you only choose light mechs, you will lack the necessary penetrating power to shoot an opponent out of position.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>So the challenge is to build a list that has an answer to almost every threat without being completely defenseless in one area.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Solution approach: It&#8217;s all in the mix<\/h2>\n\n<p>The most proven structure for an all-rounder lance consists of a balanced mix of weight classes. My preferred structure usually looks like this: <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>1 to 2 Heavy Mechs (Heavy pder Assault):<\/strong> They act as the unshakeable anchor of your battle line. They draw fire and deal out a lot of damage. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>1 to 2 medium-heavy mechs (Medium):<\/strong> The workhorses. They support the heavies, fill gaps and use their mobility for flanking maneuvers. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>At least 1 Light Mech (Light):<\/strong> Your eye on the battlefield. It is responsible for scouting, occupying mission objectives and disrupting the enemy&#8217;s ambush planning. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Example setup<\/h3>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Heavy:<\/em> Orion or Archer (fire support\/anchor)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Medium:<\/em> Phoenix Hawk or Centurion (all-rounder)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Light:<\/em> Locust or Spider (Scout)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Advantages and tactics of this solution<\/h2>\n\n<p>The biggest advantage of this formation is its <strong>tactical depth<\/strong>. You don&#8217;t just play one game, you play three at the same time: <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. stability due to the heavy<\/h3>\n\n<p>Your Heavy Mechs form the center. In Alpha Strike, positioning is everything. A heavy mech in cover forces the enemy to spend resources to move it. While the enemy is busy with your &#8220;tank&#8221;, your other units remain free.   <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. dynamics through the middle<\/h3>\n\n<p>Medium mechs are often the secret stars in Alpha Strike. They usually have a solid TMM (Target Movement Modifier), are relatively fast and have enough armor to survive a hit. They use the distraction of the Heavies to push into the flanks or intercept the enemy Scout.  <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. information advantage through the scout<\/h3>\n\n<p>A light mech with high speed ensures that you can achieve mission objectives in the first or second round. In addition, you often benefit from special skills<a href=\"https:\/\/mechstrategen.de\/en\/lance-types-simply-explained\/\" type=\"post\" id=\"2193\">(Special Unit Abilities<\/a>) in the Command Lance that can influence the initiative roll &#8211; a decisive factor in every match. <\/p>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Pro tip:<\/strong> Use the special rule for command formations from the <em>Alpha Strike Commander&#8217;s Edition<\/em> rulebook. This often allows you to give one or more pilots the &#8220;Tactical Genius&#8221; ability or similar bonuses, which massively increases your flexibility in the activation order. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Disadvantages<\/h2>\n\n<p>Where there is light, there is also shadow. The commando formation is a generalist, not a specialist. <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>&#8220;Jack of all trades, master of none&#8221;:<\/strong> A specialized lance of four Fire Moth (Clan) or other extremely fast units can quickly isolate and destroy your single Scout. After that, you won&#8217;t have the speed to hold out. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Focus Fire Vulnerability:<\/strong> If the opponent plays very disciplined and takes out your Mediums or Scout first, the synergy card house collapses faster than a lance consisting only of robust Heavies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Complexity:<\/strong> You have to keep three different movement profiles and ranges in mind. This requires more planning than a &#8220;sledgehammer&#8221; tactic, where all the mechs simply run straight ahead at the same speed. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Examples from practice: Forcepacks in use<\/h3>\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. the &#8220;Inner Sphere Command Lance&#8221;<\/h4>\n\n<p>This <a href=\"https:\/\/mechstrategen.de\/en\/inner-sphere-command-lance-forcepack\/\" type=\"post\" id=\"3030\">Inner Sphere Command Lance<\/a> set is the epitome of a classic, versatile lance. It perfectly demonstrates how to mix firepower and mobility: <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Marauder &amp; Archer (Heavy):<\/strong> These two mechs form your unshakeable center. While the <em>Archer<\/em> supports you from a distance with missile salvos, the <em>Marauder<\/em> can hold its own in a direct exchange of blows. They are the anchor against which the opponent crashes.  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Valkyrie (Light):<\/strong> A rare ray of hope among the light mechs, as it can also get involved from a distance thanks to its long-range missiles. It supports the heavies without having to jump into close combat immediately. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Stinger (Light):<\/strong> Your dedicated scout. With its jumping ability, it is perfect for occupying mission objectives or stabbing the enemy in the back while they are distracted by the big boys. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>Note: this Command Lance does not have a medium mech. However, the <strong>Valkyrie <\/strong>is very close and can be played in a similar role. <\/p>\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. the &#8220;Clan Command Star&#8221;<\/h4>\n\n<p>In the clans, a formation usually consists of five mechs (one star). This takes the Command Lance concept to an even higher performance level: <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Dire Wolf (Assault):<\/strong> A 100-ton monster, it is more than just an anchor &#8211; it is a mobile fortress. It dictates where the battle takes place. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Summoner (Heavy):<\/strong> An extremely mobile heavy mech that appears where it is needed most thanks to its jump jets.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Stormcrow &amp; Shadow Cat (Medium):<\/strong> These two form the dynamic heart of the star. The <em>Stormcrow<\/em> is incredibly fast and powerful for its size, while the <em>Shadow Cat<\/em> is the perfect flanking unit with its sensors and weaponry. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Mist Lynx (Light):<\/strong> A highly efficient small reconnaissance vehicle that ensures you always retain the initiative thanks to its speed and special equipment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>In my opinion, these two boxes are the ideal starting point, as they offer exactly the flexibility described above that you need as a single player.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion<\/h2>\n\n<p>For beginners &#8211; and also for experienced strategists looking for a solid basis &#8211; the <strong>command formation<\/strong> is unbeatable.
