But experienced commanders know that their soldiers are by no means helpless. The standard rule for digging trenches is specifically for <strong>conventional infantry<\/strong> (foot soldiers, motorized infantry or jump infantry). <\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Important restrictions:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Unit types:<\/strong> Units with the <strong>Mechanized (MEC)<\/strong> special ability or troops that do not use the Foot (f), Jump (j), or Motorized (m) movement types cannot use this standard action.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Terrain:<\/strong> You cannot dig in on roads, paved surfaces, in buildings or in water.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The process: &#8220;Digging In&#8221;<\/h3>\n\n<p>Digging in is a conscious decision that binds the deployment of your troops for one round.<\/p>\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Declaration:<\/strong> At the start of your <strong>movement phase<\/strong>, you must announce that the infantry unit is digging in.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cost:<\/strong> During this turn, the soldiers may <strong>not move, attack<\/strong> or perform any other actions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Completion:<\/strong> No dice roll is required; the process is considered completed in the <strong>final phase<\/strong> of the same turn.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Marker:<\/strong> As soon as the unit is dug in, a <strong>2-inch marker<\/strong> (centered on the position) is placed on the playing field. This marker symbolizes the fortified positions. <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Specialists at work: Fortified positions (TRN)<\/h4>\n\n<p>If your force has units with the special ability <strong>Trenchworks\/Fieldworks Engineers (TRN)<\/strong>, things get really interesting. These pioneers can construct <strong>fortified positions<\/strong> that go beyond simple digging. <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The construction:<\/strong> The pioneer unit must <strong>remain stationary for<\/strong> a <strong>full turn<\/strong> and may not attack, act as a spotter or take any other actions. During this time, it can easily be hit as a stationary target (+0 TMM). <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The marker:<\/strong> In the final phase of the following turn, a <strong>2-inch template<\/strong> is placed to mark the area as fixed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Versatility:<\/strong> In contrast to simple digging, fortified positions can be erected in any terrain except buildings or water.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The massive advantages of the cover<\/h3>\n\n<p>As soon as a position exists (whether through &#8220;Digging In&#8221; or pioneers), it offers enormous bonuses:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Defense bonus:<\/strong> All attacks against infantry in such a position receive a <strong>+2 modifier to the target number (TN)<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Hull-down synergy:<\/strong> This is the highlight for your vehicles and ProtoMechs! They can use the fortified positions to <strong>automatically<\/strong> assume a <strong>hull-down position<\/strong> without having to make the otherwise necessary success roll of 7+. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Durability:<\/strong> If a unit leaves the position, the bonus remains for <strong>any other infantry unit<\/strong> that later occupies this template.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The price:<\/strong> Units in these positions always have a <strong>target movement modifier (TMM) of +0<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The weak points: What you need to consider<\/h3>\n\n<p>Despite the protection, you are not invulnerable. There are weapons that simply ignore the +2 cover bonus: <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Heat attacks (HT)<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Inferno ammunition<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Area Effect (AoE) weapons<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>My tactical pioneer tip<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>Use your <strong>Trenchworks Engineers<\/strong> to prepare strategic points early in the game.
