Those who switch from Classic BattleTech to Alpha Strike<\/strong> often experience a culture shock. Where you used to spend hours poring over tables and crossing off individual armor sections, speed now reigns supreme. But despite the abstraction, one mathematical constant remains at the heart of the game: the cube volume<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n

What does “cube volume” mean in wargaming?<\/h3>\n\n

In the world of tabletop games, the dice volume simply describes the number of dice rolls<\/strong> that a player generates within a turn or for a specific action.<\/p>\n\n

While in Classic BattleTech you often roll for each weapon individually (resulting in many dice with (less) effect per roll), Alpha Strike bundles the firepower of a mech into a single damage value per distance. At first glance, this may seem to reduce the dice volume – but anyone who plays Alpha Strike strategically knows that the opposite is true. <\/p>\n\n

The mathematics of success: mass instead of class?<\/h3>\n\n

In Alpha Strike, the standard format is the 2D6<\/strong> attack. Here the probability curve is a bell<\/a>: 7 is the most likely, 2 and 12 are statistical outliers. <\/p>\n\n

The problem? If you only have one attack per turn per unit, you are completely dependent on this curve. One bad roll, and your 100-ton Atlas is staring you in the face. This is where the tactical dice volume comes into play: <\/p>\n\n
