As soon as the enemy formation has broken through the terrain, the fast elements of the <strong>1st Company (&#8220;The Shadows&#8221;)<\/strong> cut the connection to the rearguard, whereupon the <strong>3rd Company (&#8220;Hidden Dagger&#8221;)<\/strong> and the <strong>Hetzer tanks<\/strong> of the reserve deliver the devastating melee strike against the unprotected rear or flank from camouflaged positions.   <\/p>\n\n<p>The entire maneuver is coordinated by the command lance&#8217;s <strong>Cyclops<\/strong>, which uses the <strong>Raven<\/strong> &#8216;s sensor data to ensure that the battalion never fights where the enemy is strongest, but always where it is most vulnerable.<\/p>\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Excursus: Quality over quantity &#8211; the skill value<\/h2>\n\n<p>In <em>Alpha Strike<\/em>, standard units have a skill value of 4, which means you need a 4 or higher on 2D6 to hit a standing target at short range. This sounds simple, but as soon as movement, terrain and jumping are added, the hit probability drops drastically. <\/p>\n\n<p>An upgrade to <strong>Skill 3 (Veteran)<\/strong> or even <strong>Skill 2 (Elite)<\/strong> costs additional points (PV), but is tactically almost indispensable for certain units.<\/p>\n\n<p>Here are the three categories of units from your Liao battalion that will benefit most from a better skill:<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. the &#8220;sledgehammers&#8221; (highly efficient polluters)<\/h3>\n\n<p>When a unit deals massive damage, a missed shot is a disaster. You pay a lot of points for the weapons; make sure they hit. <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Example: AWS-8Q Awesome<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Why:<\/em> The Awesome deals constant, high damage at almost all distances.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Analysis:<\/em> With skill 4, he often only hits fast opponents at long range with a 10+ or 11+. With <strong>skill 3<\/strong>, this becomes a 9+, which increases the hit probability statistically enormously. An Awesome that doesn&#8217;t hit is just an expensive paperweight.  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. the melee fighters (Physical Attackers)<\/h3>\n\n<p>Physical attacks (such as hitting or ramming) use the skill value as a base, but <em>do not<\/em> add <em>any<\/em> modifiers to your own movement. A good pilot can make the difference between a devastating hit and an embarrassing stumble. <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Example: CGR-1A1 Charger<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Why:<\/em> The Charger has hardly any firearms. Its only task is to charge into close combat (Charge). <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Analysis:<\/em> A melee attack against a medium-fast mech often requires a 7 or 8. Give the pilot <strong>skill 3<\/strong>, and the Charger becomes a deadly guided missile. Without this skill, the Charger is often a waste of points. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. the jumpers<\/h3>\n\n<p>Mechs that jump receive a <strong>+2 modifier<\/strong> to their own attack roll in Alpha Strike. This makes them hard to hit, but they hardly hit anything themselves. <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Example: VTR-9B Victor or VND-1R Vindicator<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Why:<\/em> Your tactics are based on mobility (&#8220;victory by stealth&#8221;). The Victor often jumps behind the enemy for a shot in the back. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Analysis:<\/em> If the Victor jumps (+2) and shoots at medium range (+2), it already needs an 8+ at skill 4 (without terrain\/enemy movement!). <strong>Skill 3<\/strong> lowers this hurdle and makes your mobile units dangerous on the offensive as well. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rule of thumb for force building:<\/h3>\n\n<p>It is often better to upgrade <strong>a<\/strong> unit in the lance to skill 2 or 3 (&#8220;The Ace&#8221;) than to try to upgrade the whole lance slightly.
